All I remember is being mildly disturbed that someone peed in a bottle and kept it in their closet.

This book is awesome. Crazy insightful and it has really well rounded characters. It is kinda mean spirited though.

I'm a little undecided about The Corrections. At first, I was head over heels for the book, mostly because of Franzen's writing style. I was pulled in and swept up. But as the novel progressed and each character was examined in detail, my mind started to change. I found myself disliking every character, disconnecting from them, and getting annoyed by their actions. I'm not sure what my final impression is.

Franzen's writing is so clever and detailed, I've never read writing like it.

I am so amazed by Franzen's writing. I'm not sure if I have ever encountered prose with so much momentum before. His sentences are incomplete or they run on for a page, but you just keep going and going. The book isn't split into proper chapters so it's a bit hard to pick up the book for short segments of reading on a coffee break. But once you get to a stopping point or a line break, you come up for air, take a deep breath, and realize how big of a storm/ocean/abyss of emotion and drama you just traversed through. So to go on from the writing, this book was incredible. I will never think any family has drama after reading this. Jeez. I loved the different writing and thinking styles for each character. Franzen did a great job of getting into the head of each family member and developing their own voice. Every character was incredible, but I think Denise and Chip were my favorite. I'll hopefully pick up Freedom soon to enjoy more of Franzen's work.

In agonizing details, like a horrendous pointillistic picture, Franzen depicts a portrait of House Lambert, a nightmare of passive-aggressiveness, assholes and hollowed out papier-mache characters.
There are some strong brushstrokes here and there, but when you enter the playground belonging to Wallace and Pynchon, you definitely need a certain amount of genius to play along. Sorry Jonathan!
