About the Book: Racing, the cult sport Brennan had no interest in, now tangled in a murder investigation, and fool acting FBI agents, who make her work and life progressively worse. Whose body is it, how it ended up in a barrel with racing track asphalt in it, and why it feels like someone’s in the higher up is trying to cover it up?…
My Opinion: Brennan is a condescending and judgmental bitch, it was hard to read. Constant remarks on people, how they’re pretty but dumb, what are their sexual arrangements, their weight. Add it to a barely simmering plot, extremely two-dimentional, shallow characters, and you get a chore to waste your time. I keep foolishly hoping to feel that Bones vibe again, but I’m starting to realize that Bones didn’t irk me the way this book does is because Brennan there was portrayed to be on the spectrum, so some of her behaviors came off wrong until you got her thought process out there, where’s here she’s just arrogant, as her thought process is what you read. Constantly.

Is it just me or the series is getting stale? I could tell the author had a deadline - half baked plot, repeated characters (Galimore is a taller, more brunet version of Detective Ryan), cliches (can we stop already with the X File type of FBI agents? that's just not how it works!), undeveloped characters, unsympathetic victims. Massive gaps in logic (the FBI decides to drop the case against a far-right group out of fear they will be provoked and become violent!?!? WTF, the exact opposite would happen). Anyway, not worth a full review.
Hesitant about reading the final book in the series, which is coming out soon.

Tempe Brennan is back in the Charlotte “stinky room” with the latest discovery, a body in a landfill. It’s race week in Charlotte and with this discovery located so close to the Speedway Tempe is receiving pressure from race officials to solve this case as soon as possible. And to make matters worse, the FBI has stepped in and are ready and willing to keep Tempe out of the loop in solving the crime. A NASCAR crew member has shared with Tempe the loss of his sister twelve years earlier and he’s hoping that the discovery she made will solve the disappearance. As Tempe delves in to the mystery of persons missing for years and more recent, she must work around the road blocks the FBI keeps erecting to discover what is really going on at the Speedway. Great read and I really enjoyed how well woven the multiple mysterious were.
I don't really know why I keep grabbing on the books, I think I'm finished with the series then I go and crave another after a while. They feel cozy in a weird way and they can be quite enjoyable but not really something to hang in the Christmas tree.
Not enough Ryan. Not enough Boyd and Birdie. And the book is set in Charlotte not Montreal (which is still an improvement from last year's Hawaii trip). I have my priorities and so I'm not fully satisfied with my Tempe fix. The level of predictability is pretty much the same as in the last few books (I knew who the killer was around 1/3 of the book) but everything in this one seemed rushed. Brennan haven't really done any bones work, she did spend a lot of time in a car though. It also lacked the balance between the crime and the personal. The case itself was okay even though I know nothing about NASCAR. Well, I know something now.
3 stelline invece che quattro solo perchè mi aspettavo di più, visto quando amo la serie televisiva. Diciamo che nella realtà sarebbero 3 e mezzo.

This is Kathy Reichs' best Temperance Brennan novel that I've read so far. It was fast paced, witty, intelligent, and enjoyable through almost every chapter. There's several threads in this story, and 5 or so bodies to keep Brennan believably engaged and involved throughout the novel. There's very little downtime here- she jumps from lead to lead, tagging along with several other side characters and putting together the mysteries at hand. Slidell and Galimore added their own spice to the story, and were well rounded and fleshed out.
The backdrop of Charlotte and the NASCAR race kept the story interesting and different, but not so overpowering that they took over the story. To be honest, I was a little weary choosing this particular Reichs novel because it focused on NASCAR (because I'm not a fan at all) but she had a light touch with it, and inserted just enough history and trivia to engage the reader without overwhelming them.
The only sticking point I had was with the side story of Brennan's ex-husband and his annoying fiancee. They added nothing to the story and I cringed every time I had to read about them. I would much rather have seen the thread of her nephew's surprise child fleshed out, honestly, instead of it happening entirely off-screen.
All in all, a very enjoyable procedural, and a great starting point for anyone who would like to read a Brennan novel but isn't sure which one to pick up first!

I love all of her books; this one was a little light on the story (some of her plots just draw you in with their intricacy and this one wasn't as enthralling), but I did read it over the course of a day and enjoyed it.
This book revolves around the Charlotte Motor Speedway and the days leading up the Coco-cola 500. A body is found embedded in asphalt in a landfill. Because of the layer in the landfill it is presumed to have been put there 10-15 years earlier. There are multiple possibilities of who it could be. All these people turn out to be involved together.
The mystery was good, but I had solved who and why long before it occurred to Tempe. I'm disappointed that she was on a completely wrong track. Still a good book if you are interested in forensics.
