This wasn’t my favorite book by Kathy, but was still a good read.
I don't think this audiobook was abridged, though it never said "unabridged". It seems that Kathy Reichs has been listening to her fan base, though: this book moved a long better than some of the others of late, and there was almost no ridiculous soap opera relationship issues with Det Andrew. Still a lot of rhetorical questions, but more of the science and mystery that makes the books interesting. Too bad Brennan was a bit daft at figuring this one out, because the reader gets it long before she does.
I enjoy learning something and not just trying to figure out whodunit as I listen to or read a mystery. This time around it's a history of NASCAR. I should know more considering I am married to a Virginia man who grew up with it in his blood....but I don't.
It's a busy book to listen to or read, but well-told. Reichs still gets into the weeds with her explanations of medical schtuff, but not nearly so much as in the beginning. I love learning, but my brain will never pick up all of the medical minutiae. I like how Brennan follows each lead, sometimes to nothing, sometimes finding the next link. She admits when she's wrong and I admire that.
I had meandered from the series for a time and glad I found it again.
Definite recommend.

A good addition to the series. I read it in one day :)
Let me first point out that I am a long time fan of Kathy Reichs and this series. I eagerly await for each book to come out and in general I normally read it straight away, although with this one, there was plenty of books in the pile beforehand to be read for studying and the likes, that I couldn't avoid.
I was excited to finally have it at the top of my list, but I was disappointed within a few pages, and generally annoyed/angry by the end.
This review definitely deserves a list.
1. What. The. Hell. Is. With. Summer? I know that with a few general favourites gone that there was room for a few more characters to come in but I don't understand the point of her in this other than a side character to fill up space, and the general Temp/Pete thing going on. Is this a hint they are getting back together?
2. The random nephew was pretty damn random and a totally useless and eye-rolling fact.
3. Unlike any other book in this series I guessed who the killer was nearly as soon as they where introduced. I felt like the normal confusion and 'it could be anyone' vibe wasn't there and that it was clear as day to any fan who the killer was. I actually felt anger towards the end that Temperance could be so. damn. stupid.
4. The way it was written didn't sit right with me a the start. It felt like Kathy Reichs had serious writers block and she just forced words onto the page. It didn't flow at all. Short sentences and random facts (too many damn lines dedicated to that stupid cat *grr*) in between lines of prose. Too many rhetorical questions that found me skipping pages with like 20 question marks on them. By the end, the writing was back to its general good quality, but the start felt weak.
5. Maybe a personal thing but there is definitely something old about Tempe getting herself in too deep and getting into deadly situations. Surely Reichs can think of something new and excited.
I generally love the series and although I have certain faults, like the last one, the way it is written and the generally plot lines normally redeem it entirely, but this one, no. I can say I like it but it was nothing special and I have to admit I'm slightly put off. I will read the next novel, but I definitely won't be pre-ordering it like normal.

read for the 2015 reading challenge: a mystery or thriller
See, once you reach the 13th or 14th book in a crime novel series, things aren't so thrilling anymore. I remember how I literally ate these books up when I was 16/17 and totally into the science aspects of crime investigation and also 'Bones' had just started airing.
A charismatic main character could help to avoid a book series turning bland, however this Tempe Brennan... doesn't really qualify as one. I'm not sure if it's the German translation, but the jokes often feel super awkward, even more so if they have to be explained. Ryan is usually good fun, but it was kind of weird how he kept appearing in the books that don't take place in Canada, so I'm glad he wasn't in this one. Not that this keeps Tempe from thirsting (and holy shit is that woman THIRSTY), her libido just flares up due to other men. I really don't get that part, tbh. Give me more bones, more science, introduce more cool techniques, I don't want to read about how much the smell of a man's sweat gets you in the mood, that's disgusting.
The big bad guys in this novel are bigoted shithead racists and this book tries so hard to be progressive but there is so much fat- and slut-shaming going on that it seems rather hypocritical. It's super casually sexist too, I cannot believe the things I had to read with my own eyes; Pete has absolutely no respect for Summer, the woman he intends to marry and instead of properly adressing how fucked up this is, the book just writes it off as 'aaah yes, men* thinking with their penises' and Tempe hates Summer more for this than Pete. Plus, the book keeps acting as if Pete and Tempe are so above Summer, if you want to be snobs about how educated you are, fucking leave that poor woman alone. I hate the both of you.
Why DO I keep buying these books? I mean, I already own 13 and I've been so underwhelmed by the book before (Spider Bones it was, I think?). Also, lmao, nice job inventing that great-niece of Tempe just so you have a conveniently teenaged protagonist for your YA spinoff series, that doesn't sound like milking the cash cow at all.
I know, I am more rambling than reviewing, but god, I need to stop buying these books, I hate 'em.
*this obviously refers to cis men only and by 'obviously' I mean I have yet to find a trans person in this novels. There is an intersex person in one of the earlier novels tho
