While I normally enjoy the Temperance Brennan books, this one disappointed me. Personally, I don’t have lot to say about it beyond that it was a dud. Many of the characters we met and Tempe worked with were downright revolting. Once again Tempe and Ryan are at odds which is frustrating and has been going on too long. Plus Tempe makes poor decisions and puts herself in danger once again. You would think she would remember that she’s done this before and it turned out badly. Apparently, the bad decisions in past books have disappeared from her memory even though none of Ryan’s sexual deeds have.

I don't think this audiobook was abridged, though it never said "unabridged". It seems that Kathy Reichs has been listening to her fan base, though: this book moved a long better than some of the others of late, and there was almost no ridiculous soap opera relationship issues with Det Andrew. Still a lot of rhetorical questions, but more of the science and mystery that makes the books interesting. Too bad Brennan was a bit daft at figuring this one out, because the reader gets it long before she does.
I'm sorry to say it, but I was a little disappointed in this book. I think the previous books in the series were of such high caliber that I had high expectations for it. I'm afraid it just didn't quite live up.
I felt that the forensics took a back seat to police work in this story. And the police work wasn't even being done by the police most of the time, but rather Brennan and a security guard with a suspicious past. The forensics was the original reason I started reading this series. Without it, it's just another murder mystery.
That brings me to the issue of having yet another potential love interest introduced. Didn't Brennan have her hands full with the other two men in her life, but to add further confusion for her (and the reader) with the smokin' hot ex-cop, Cotton Galimore? Not that I have anything against the attractive male characters, but I just felt that she didn't have a connection with Galimore, constantly comparing him to Detective Ryan or attorney Charlie Hunt.
I found the plot a little thin, as well as the characters. When I'm 14 books into a series, I expect to find the characters changing and growing, but instead they are very much back at square one. I truly hope the next book will be back to her usual standard.

A Temperance Brennan mystery about NASCAR racing. Decent fun, low calorie read.
The series is holding up pretty well, characters at least grow & change. I just don't like NASCAR. at all.
