The second half of the novel is her healing - but the threat of her abuser is always there, for reasons I won't spoil. It was impossible for me to get into a romance/ enjoy explicit sex scenes after reading the first half of the novel.
This book, from the cover to the description to the "forbidden love set in the explosive world of the NBA" headline completely misrepresents what the book is actually about in my opinion in a really irresponsible way. I'm all for having a character whose been through trauma finding love and re-discovering/ re-claiming their sexuality. But the extent of on-the-page violence in a romance-genre book that describes itself as a "forbidden romance"... was just way too much.
for someone who hates sports i sure do like sports romances. this book made me feel EVERYTHING. content warning for domestic and sexual abuse. i appreciated the way Kennedy Ryan handled this, her commentary around outsiders' opinions on abusive relationships, and that she took Iris's healing seriously.
