I really liked the comforting, warm, “hygge” feel of this book. Tallie’s house sounds scrumptious; a place to feel safe. Lionel’s house sounded gorgeous, featured in Architectural Digest, and a place I want to see.
The story was unique however parts of the dialogue and interactions felt forced to me, leading to a 3 star rating.

this was...a journey. at times i was convinced i was reading a horror novel, and there was a HEFTY amount of trauma here (as one should expect when the main characters meet during a suicide attempt). but i ultimately loved both of the main characters, and i think they are the true driving force behind this book.

is it a perfect book? no.
is it worth reading? yes.

At first glance, it seemed like This Close to Okay was going to be a typical ChickLit. Two strangers meet under harrowing circumstances and then spend a cathartic weekend together. ChickLit at its finest.

However, the themes in the book take it beyond typical ChicLit: addiction and recovery, racism, mental health awareness, family... It’s emotional and honest and very moving at times, yet these themes don’t weigh it down. It’s a quick, fun read.

The two main characters, Tallie and Emmett, were relatable in their flaws. Sometimes, when books try and put two flawed characters together they're just so far out of the realm of reality that you spend half the book smacking your head and rolling your eyes. But not these two. I was rooting for them the entire time.

My only negative comment is that the dialogue felt forced and very perfunctory. Rather than flowing naturally, the conversations between Tallie and Emmett were just a way to bring in their backstories. Other than that, this was a perfectly enjoyable read!

When you need a little bit more than ChickLit, but you're not ready to spend the next two days in bed crying because of your book, this is the perfect book for you!

I felt largely indifferent while reading the book. The author has a strange obsession with metaphors and also made some ....interesting decisions in writing this book. I was never really invested in any characters unfortunately and the plot also didn't do too much for me. The ending did redeem the book a bit though. I liked the way the ending went and it was my favourite part of the book

This was a good, solid book. I enjoyed reading it, and I was invested in the characters. But there was nothing special or memorable about it, so it's just a 3 star read for me.

I devoured this book. Loved the characters and so well written. Highly recommend!

4.5 stars. Gutting. Beautiful. I don't want to say anything more because I don't want to ruin anything. But gosh, a very poignant novel.
