This book disappointed me. I picked it from the fiction section in the library in a bid to find an author that I hadn't read before. This author had many books on the shelf (has to be good if he's published lots of books, right?) and the premise of the story -- about a man dealing with the aftermath of the kidnapping of his daughter -- was intriguing.
Unfortunately, the book was filled with unimportant details and plodded slowly to nowhere. It was so hard to get into the story. And when I was reading, I wasn't enjoying it. Which is odd for me. I love to read.

The Child in Time is one of Ian McEwan’s earlier books, written in the mid-1980′s. It is an odd book, the themes and subplots of which all have to do with childhood and the relationships between children and their parents, but I did not come away from the novel with a coherent idea of its message.

Personalmente ho trovato questo libro brillante, ma lento. Soltanto per far capire che potrebbero esserci persone che lo percepiscano come noioso. Io sono convinta di essermi trovata tra le mani un capolavoro straziante, un indagine sul senso di vuoto non derivato solo da un'assenza, ma dal non poter afferrare e processare i traumi per andare avanti. Io credo che la maggiore qualità sia l'uso dei piani temporali differenti dove presente, passato e futuro esistono nello stesso istante rendendosi possibili a vicenda. Lettura non facile, continui pugni nello stomaco, indagine del dolore che si presta proprio al farlo sentire anche nelle viscere del lettore. Ogni elemento, ogni personaggio, ogni frase, ogni parola, ogni sezione, ritmo compreso è calibrato per ottenere un dosaggio perfetto, per avere il suo posto in un meccanismo perfetto che non tutti riuscirebbero a far funzionare. McEwan è un maestro in questo, si tratta del mio primo approccio all'autore che approfondirò senz'altro.

L’altro giorno ho visto “The Child in Time” (ciao Benedict), poi... ho dovuto recuperare subito il libro.
Alla fine della visione sentivo che McEwan mi avrebbe dato qualcosa in più, e non sbagliavo.
A parte il fatto che la stessa sua scrittura costituisce metà della bellezza del libro, con le sue affascinanti espressioni e la sua prosa schietta ed elegante (“Stephen attraversò insieme agli altri e cercò di lasciarsi invadere dall’insulto della normalità del mondo.”), è quello che si trova fra le righe il vero nocciolo della storia.
Come altri scrittori, anche lui sfrutta una storia, semplice (angosciante), per raccontare qualcosa sull’uomo, per riflettere un po’ su noi stessi e la vita. In “Bambini nel tempo” si parla di bambini perduti, di bambini ritrovati nei ricordi e nel presente, e si parla della vita e della sua ciclicità, di come le cose non sempre vanno come vorremmo e nell’ordine in cui vorremmo, e di come a volte sopravviviamo, e a volte viviamo.
Sono pochissimi i libri di McEwan che ho letto, ma ogni volta mi angoscia e incanta allo stesso tempo.

Kind of disappointed in this novel, because usually I love McEwan's intelligent prose. I found that the plot really let him down here however.
Classically, it starts with a single event that happens to the main character that changes the course of his life. As with most McEwan novels, it was dramatic and gripping and I loved the first chapter. I felt like this kind if spiraled out of control though, and by the end there were so many threads of the story that for me just didn't make sense together. What happened to Kate? I wasn't expecting to find out exactly, but there seemed to be nothing to pull us back around to the singular, primary event.
I also felt like at times it just got confusing. The narrator was depressed and experiences psychosis, but I don't think this was made clear enough, possibly due to McEwan's dense prose which at time I think over-complicates the simplest of things. In this book he tried to mess with reality and time, and I don't think it worked. It felt like kind of a mess.
