I definitely give this book three stars for the concept, and the writing itself. Perkins does a fantastic job of setting up a very ominous tone as the story begins. It almost feels like a slow start but you need it to set that up. The writing really did make me very claustrophobic and freaked out about going out into nature. What detracts from the story for me were the characters themselves. It's perhaps because I'm older and these were younger characters, or because the decisions they make, through too much of this story, excepting maybe the end, really just upset me because they were just not smart choices.

I think as a YA thriller it is decent and I'd recommend for people to read it in that age range. I'm not sure someone who reads thrillers all the time would like it as much though.

This book started off EXHAUSTING with the girls’ bickering. I was ready to put it down but I wanted to push through. It gets graphic and gross real fast. This book wasn’t worth pushing through. Josie would’ve bled out almost immediately. In the end a BEAR kills the murderers, and then Josie, with no driving experience, and ONE HAND AND ONE FOOT just drives off into the sunset while the other one is having an asthma attack. Nope. This ain’t it.

Although the title - The Woods Are Always Watching - foreshadows the horrors that await in this well-written YA novel, I was still surprised by the gruesome events that unfolded. As best friends Josie and Neena set out on a three-day adventure hike in remote Appalachia to assert their independence together before parting ways for college, I was utterly annoyed by their naïveté and their families for allowing them to go alone. It’s obvious that something dreadful will happen, and this novel did not disappoint. If you’re a fan of teen horror movies you’ll enjoy this book. The straight A, virginal heroines are stronger than they ever thought they could be. And will likely be in therapy for a very long time! The plot and characters were well developed. My anxiety was through the roof, but I couldn’t set the book down.

Thanks to Penguin Teen and Bookish First for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The first 100 pages are just the 2 main characters disagreeing and fighting and then the book gains some traction, but not the kind of spooky I had hoped for.
