Reminiscent of “Be not Far from me” .
But seemed a bit unfinished.
As always Perkins’ writing is phenomenal. It’s descriptive and beautiful. Just the story itself didn’t make it all the way there for me.
I found it hard to believe that the girls would go out on their own like that. Also hard to believe that they wouldn’t have turned back within the first 3 hours. But I found a lot of things hard to believe about this one. The ending was not quite was o wanted it to be in terms of resolution, but I don’t necessarily think that is Perkins’ fault. Just my tastes. So I’m saying this one just wasn’t for me.

The book's first half was slow and hard to read, but the second half flew by. I really like the story, but there were a few parts that had me crashing my head.
i honestly don’t even know what to rate this book because it scared the shit out of me
I loved the first half, but definitely needed some clarification for the end.
The story started out very slow. I liked the relationship the two main characters shared, and I thought it was a very realistic portrayal of best friends that are going down different paths. But essentially nothing happened until the half way point. From that point on the events were so wildly convenient, over dramatic and unbelievable that I could no longer suspend my disbelief and fully enjoy the story.

Ugh I don't even know why I try with Stephanie Perkins and her attempts at horror YA. I HATED There's Someone Inside Your House. I was hoping this one would be better, but nope I HATED this too. It's like the book equivalent of really bad indie low budget horror movie. The main thing I disliked was that it's so unbelievable! I felt like it was just meant to be "horror" without any sense or reason or anything really. I also felt that there was little research done about this story so it was executed poorly.
The plot was basically non existent. Two girls decide to go on a couple days hike with zero experience. I don't know much about trail hiking, but my friend did the ATL once and there were many things I didn't find believable in the book. Firstly, you kind of have to train for it a bit. I don't think it's safe for someone who's never been camping and someone who went camping as a kid, and is borrowing equipment including hiking shoes! My friend had to break hers in and ugh so many things wrong with that already. Like at least try going on a day trip first before doing something overnight.
I didn't enjoy the characters and honestly I didn't really care if they lived, I just didn't want to read the gruesome details if they did die or how they get their fucking hand shot off. WTF Stephanie Perkins?! Their "fight" was just dumb and frustrating as it kind of did nothing for the story really. They really should have just changed their minds and gone home. It didn't even make sense for them to continue. There was no character background or real development. Again, it seems the author is writing scenes for some bad indie horror instead of an actual book.
Then when Josie fell, I feel like if her injury was as bad as described she wouldn't have been able to do all that she did. Like I'm surprised she didn't even faint out of shock or blood loss? I don't think a T-Shirt and fucking pads are gonna take care of that shit.
The villains were so fucking random. Like they're having a killing spree and no one knows about it. Obviously there's no real story or background with them. Other than they're psycho rapist serial killers that have been getting away with things for a while.
Also the timing of that bear at the end?!?! WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. This book offended me. Ok bye.

Spoiler
Then there's the fact that was no one on the trail. I mean this might be an uncommon trail, but it seemed they were on part of the ATL during summer, which I feel would be a lot more popular with even day hikers, but they only met one couple the whole time. That does not seem right. Also, it seemed there were a lot of disappearances . I think in real life there would be reports and some level of investigation or warning. I remember my friend also said that ATL trails were usually low in crime so I feel like the author should have just picked a random low populated place/trail.I didn't enjoy the characters and honestly I didn't really care if they lived, I just didn't want to read the gruesome details if they did die or how they get their fucking hand shot off. Perkin’s writing has great teen horror energy- easy, breezy reads with some over the top gore. I am not generally a fan of hillybilly horror, so I will say this novel didn’t hit for me the way There’s Someone in your House did, but with a novel you can finish over the course of a short flight (I think this one took me under four hours)… how wrong can you go?
