This was … okay. I listen to the National Park After Dark podcast and this definitely gave me similar vibes. I liked the fast pace and the underlying sadness of what happens when friends grow apart, some leave for college and others stay behind, etc.

But what is with the weird dialogue between teenagers in some of these YA books? Have you ever heard a teenage girl say “bite your tongue!” to their friend, even as a joke??? And they resorted to screaming at each other / thinking their friendship was over after a single day of hiking. How strong is your friendship in the first place that some blisters are breaking you up??? Girl…

It unfortunately lost me even further at the end. I kind of wish it was just a bear the whole time. Or they convinced themselves they were being hunted but it was all in their minds.

Also the stereotype/conspiracy of “feral” people in the Appalachians…… so tired.

This book was super weird. And gross. And like two stories that seemed unrelated kind of shoved together? Like it was a coming of age hiking story about friendships growing apart and then turned into a graphic thriller type story.

I started listening to the audiobook after I wanted to listen to books read by the same woman that I liked in another book's narration.

“Would you rather meet a man or a bear in the woods?”

This book is the embodiment of that question.

I will always choose the bear.

TERRIFYING!
A camping trip that goes horribly wrong! Would love to see this made into a movie like they did with “There’s Someone Inside Your House.”

No as good as There’s Someone Inside Your House, but a fast, fun read.

i was curious why this book got some very negative reviews, so i decided to binge read it! buckle up for this review literally nobody asked for. (yay!)

3⭐️’s is what i rate books that “aren’t super amazing but still worth the read”

i went into this book expecting a story of two girls getting lost in the horrors of the forest. i was slightly confused when i realized i was almost halfway through the book and nothing much had happened yet. (other than some strange vibes and sticks cracking etc)
i didn’t mind the late start to the horrible events though, i enjoyed reading the first part where the two girls struggled with their massive backpacks and mosquitoes. (and i’m a person with a very short attention span).
the actual PLOT of the story happened quite quickly one you got past page 100 or so.
things escalated quickly for the unhappy campers as they realized that they weren’t as alone as they thought.
the story really highlights the fear women have to go through and the precautions they have to take when it comes to strange men. it’s uncomfortable to read but in a good way. it brings to light a lot of the scariest things that can happen.
and i think that aspect of the story is why i gave it 3 stars as opposed to 2.
all in all the story itself was pretty good, it felt slightly rushed, prehaps because of its late start? and the ending was the most disappointing part of the book. no epilogue, no closure that our protagonists got away safely. it just cut off abruptly.
but besides all the complaints, i did enjoy reading this book. i wouldn’t say DONT read it, cause i did like it. but i’m not gonna go around gushing about how good it was.

I feel very sad giving a Stephanie Perkins book only 2 stars because I adore her original romance series. But this was not what I was expecting.

The first almost half of the book is the two main characters trudging through the woods/wilderness whilst complaining the whole time. Then BOOM the story went from 0% - 100% and all the creepy/gory stuff happened.

I like a good scare but this was so icky, definitely not for the faint hearted. There's plenty of detail into injuries, dead bodies and other violent happenings. It also felt very stereotypical of the type of bad guys you'd find out in the woods.

I hope Stephanie Perkins goes back to romance, I enjoy it so much more.
