I was barely able to continue past chapter 1. The main characters were so annoying with their constant bickering, whining, and complaining. I forced myself to move forward because I have never DNF'd a book and didn't want to start now. The next few chapters were more of the same. In fact, nothing really happened until around page 100. In a book that only has 221 pages, that was disappointing. Finally, when they were separated, I was able to read it with more enthusiasm. So, in short, 1st half was miserable, and the 2nd half was decent enough to keep reading.

Well I finished it. I think the book overall was pretty gory, which I didn't expect, and the ending seemed oddly convenient. We have no idea why the antagonists were up to what they were up to. The first half of the book was also a messy, toxic friendship unraveling which was not the most enjoyable thing to read. I'm willing to suspend disbelief to a certain extent, but the amount of things one character is able to accomplish while gravely injured is impossible even in a fictional setting.

It was an entertaining book. It was most assuredly YA and it took about 3 hours to read. It was pretty intense up until the end. It was definitely worth reading. The title is a bit misleading but it does take place in Appalachia.

DNF’d at 30%. The least interesting characters and longest ‘horror’ set-up ever. The book reads like a coming of age story or a contemporary young adult feel-good story much rather than how it’s actually marketed. I don’t think this is the right genre for Perkins. I think she did much better focusing her energy on romance.
