Dangerous Breed

Wow! This book is one you cannot put down! I read it in a day! It has everything you expect and need from a James Onley book if you know what I mean!! ! Sweet and hot Smexy times! Memphis escaped his abusive father and brother years ago and has been living in LA. He still has all the emotional and physical scars and is very lonely but he is surviving. Preacher is an ex con that now helps his friends rescue innocent people. Preacher rescues Memphis's younger brother Knox and they reach out to bring Memphis home! This is where it all begins as Memphis and Preacher have an instant chemistry and attraction. they end up working together along with the Elite Protection Services - YEY! to protect Knox. The Action is non stop, the characters well developed. So happy to see the all the guys from the Elite Protectors series! they bring some humor into the adventure! There is suspense and action but also some sweet and steamy times. There is a Treehouse and Lots of Dogs too!!! I received an ARC for my honest opinion which is I highly recommend this one if you like an good action plot with engaging characters!

Preacher hasn't been out of prison for long. He doesn't regret the act that put him in jail for most of his life, but he certainly doesn't want to go back either. Memphis has been getting by, trying to find some semblance of peace. Peace isn't easy to find when he knows his father would happily see him dead and could come for him at any time.

In helping his friends end a dogfighting ring, Preacher stumbles upon a boy chained up with the dogs doing everything he can to keep them safe. As it turns out, this boy is the younger brother Memphis thought would be safe when he ran away from his family. Memphis drops everything to run to the brother he wants to keep safe more than anything and runs directly into Preacher.

Finding a way to keep Memphis and his younger brother safe from their father, their father's crew, and the cops in his pocket is going to take everything Preacher can give, but something about Memphis won't let Preacher walk away.

If you want the short version of my review, it's this:

I really liked it, and I am adding more books by the author to my 'to read' list. However, anyone sensitive to stories of violence and abuse (including villains abusing animals) should proceed with caution.

Here's the full version:

I had some concerns that I might be lost reading Dangerous Breed since I hadn't read the previous book in the series, Endangered Species. I didn't need to worry! I had enough information to follow the plot and enjoy the background characters without feeling bogged down by background information. The plot is exciting and intense, the main characters are sympathetic and compelling, the romance is surprisingly tender, and the chemistry between them is HOT. I loved that Preacher and Memphis's interactions were often both filthy and poignant, spicy and sweet. Their connection happens fast, but it doesn't read as overly insta-love, more like there was an instant connection that strengthens quickly due to intense situations and relying on each other in close quarters. The ending is satisfying for these two while still inviting the reader to come back to the series to check in on Preacher and Memphis as well as find out more about their other friends.

If you struggle to read books with violence and abuse, I suggest treading carefully. However, if you enjoy romantic thrillers and have a decent tolerance for brutality, I highly recommend checking out this book!

Thanks to the crew at Gay Romance Readers for giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Here's the thing, if you're going to write an insta love romance, there has to be more to the book than them boning and making "love confessions." Dangerous Breed started out strong, but in the first 30% of the story, we knew everything there was to know. Memphis had already shown Preacher his scars that made him insecure, they were already having sex, they were already falling for each other, and the forced proximity trope was already happening. So what else was there to take place? The fight between Nash and Memphis happened of course at the end of the story so you really could just skip a whole 40% of the book and you wouldn't be missing much. Usually, I enjoy Onley's books, but this was quite boring. Also, if you give someone a trauma factor, can we not rush that? Memphis had a clear phobia of being touched, yet a complete stranger within a few weeks mind you was able to combat that. Okay

Memphis grew up in a household where being gay caused him literal physical harm at the hands of his father. Running away from home was necessary. He later meets Preacher under unusual circumstances. Memphis' brother, Knox, is in real trouble and needs help.

Preacher may look tough and ferocious, but he was a a gentle giant for Memphis. He too, has quite a story to tell among the pages in this book.

Preacher and Memphis were seriously made for one another. Their characters practically leaped off the pages. Keeping you mentally and physically, engrossed in their story.

The mutual need to keep Knox safe, also added fuel to their desire.

Plenty of intense action, excitement, suspense, and steaming hot sex scenes.

I love the strength of Onley's characters

They're never one dimensional, always complex and so human, as well as insanely hot! Another page turned - Onley is an auto buy for me!

Why did I wait so long to read this book! I loved Preacher and Memphis!

I simply adored Preacher… and he was the perfect match for Memphis!

Preacher, excon, now released from prison spends his time rescuing animals and children from abusive situations. Imagine his surprise when he and the team are rescuing dogs from a dog fighting ring and he stumbles across a young boy that is obviously malnourished, and has been abused and chained to a wall.

Memphis suffered so much at the hands of his family until he finally escaped. He has tried to start a new life, in a new city, constantly looking over his shoulder waiting for the day his family comes for him and ends him for good.

Memphis receives a phone call one day informing him that his younger brother is in the hospital. He puts his fear aside and boards the next plane out to rescue Knox. Memphis and Knox’s story broke my heart. Memphis has a lot of trauma to overcome... Will he ever accept the fact that someone could love him for who he is? Scars on the inside and outside?

Preacher and Memphis are one of those couples that just worked for me! I became emotionally invested in both of them from page one, and as the story progressed, I needed them to get revenge, and a happily ever after. These two have a lot to work through, but the way they grow together was perfect.

This book is dark, it has dark themes, it has pain and suffering... but it also has two wounded souls coming together to create something beautiful and almost whole. AND surprise! Numerous Elite Protection characters make appearances... OMG I loved the cameos! The Trauma Twink Squad was amazing!

This book was excellent, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I wasn't even halfway through the book when I called my best friend to tell her she must read it. A must read romance in my opinion and if this author writes it, I am going to read it!

Not actively bad, just not what I was looking for.

I have read everything by Onley James, and the reason is because she really knows how to create drama and pain within the story without a lot of relationship angst. Her characters are flawed but endearing. They’ve been through hell we can’t fathom and find light on the other side because they found someone who will love and fight for them. Preacher and Memphis need each other in a way neither expect and that comes across in James’ writing. Through steam and high stakes, this book takes us on a painful but lovely journey between two men who just want their hard fought HEA. Oh and did I mention steam? This book is sexy as heck. I just wanted more!
