Danielle Daniel's writing is absolutely beautiful and gets you hooked right from page one.. This book is focused on inter racial relationships/mixed children between Alogonquin and early French settlers near Trois-Rivieres.
Marie is a healer and Pierre (her second husband) is a French Solider that her chief told her to marry to cement their alliance with the French. Jeanne - the first child born of the new marriage - finds herself caught between two worlds as it becomes clear she's two spirit and battles with how in her mothers culture she's seen as blessed but an abomination in her fathers.

This book is incredibly sad, and even sadder when you get to the end and learned it's based in the reality of Daniel's ancestors. While I went in with a good knowledge of atrocities committed against Indigenous peoples in Canada in the name of the church, it was still a bit of a shock to read. Dividing the narrative between Marie and Jeanne added a great deal to the book - I think a whole book about one or the other would not have had the same impact as insight into both. Daniel is a talented writer and I am really looking forward to whatever comes next from her.

I haven't cried this much because of a book in a long time. Daughters of the Deer is tough to get through (I recommend looking up content warnings before picking it up), but so so worth it. Jeanne's story in particular really resonated with me, and I found myself relating to many of her experiences and struggles despite the differences in time and culture. I can't recommend this novel enough.
