At first I was so excited thinking this was going to be my first 5 star book of the year until whatever started happening after chapter 18.

!! Spoilers for this book & Secrets of a Summer Night below !!

After the whole lack of true consent and Westcliff outwardly noting he’s taking advantage of her yet still sleeping with her… didn’t sit right with me. I was actively yelling NO NO NO the entire time. Not to mention after that the kidnapping?!

I’ve noticed at this point Kleypas loves to add an insane event at the 90% mark whether it be the explosion from Secrets of a Summer Night or in this case the kidnapping. They aren’t necessarily my cup of tea. I’m just not sure how I’m going to get through the next books seeing how Lord St Vincent is the love interest in the next book…

the thing is…. why are the book and the audiobook different? the audiobook isn’t abridged so why did they change so much? Lisa K. gives me bad vibes for no reason a lot? like i really liked this but i feel like i shouldn’t? and now i have to reread the last one to see if it’s completely different from the audiobook?

Incredible the way that the author was able to destroy any sympathy or liking for the male protagonist, Marcus, after having enjoyed his presence in the previous books, with just the first chapter.
Was mainly just boring, which was really unfortunate because I really liked Lillian in the first book of the series!

Jesus, I was expecting a lot more from this book, I know it's ludicrous considering its a trashy romance novel but come on! This reads like a fanfiction, and a terrible one at that. Maybe I should've read the first book in the series, but I've never had a problem connecting with the characters when I skipped around with Julia Quinn's books. The male lead is a brute and a bully, he assaults the female lead and is so self righteous I simply could not like him. Lillian is cute, a little headstrong, but at least she was likeable. The plot was random and seemed almost like the author just tried to fit in as many trashy tropes as she could. I love Julia Quinn's books and this was recommended to me so I expected something of the same quality, but where Quinn's couples are obviously in love and have time to develop their love Marcus and Lillian are rushed and just antagonistic towards each other. I can't imagine this relationship would last long realistically.

Songs:
  • In My Feelings - Lana Del Rey
  • Midnight Rain - Taylor Swift
  • Video Games - Lana Del Rey (for the perfume line lol)

Read the book in one day. Lots of dubcon as a trope which normally I don't love but somehow it actually worked for me here, maybe my bar was lower because I went in kind of knowing that was the case. I'm interested in how they reform the rake next book
