This is... a little confusing and a bit heavier than I thought it would be. From what I gather, Midnighter's not with his ex, Apollo, anymore and he's on the market for a new partner. Meanwhile, some mysterious lady, The Gardener, has been robbed of a bunch of important things and she wants Midnighter to help her get them back. Midnighter has a personal stake in what's been stolen, so he agrees to help.

The writing doesn't flow smoothly in some places and can feel a bit awkward to read. I wasn't being pulled in by the story or characters. The art is pretty cool, with nice colours, but can be too busy for my taste during action scenes.

I wanted to like this book. I'm excited about diversity and inclusion, and I always hope for the best when it comes to content and characters that increase representation. However, Midnighter is mildly disappointing. It's not a bad first issue, but it doesn't have the magic I'm looking for (the magic Constantine: The Hellblazer seems to have). I'll wait for the next issue.

In which Midnighter gets some D, does some heroics, and laments over how much he misses Apollo.

One of the best comics I’ve ever read. I adore this character and the people who inhabit his world. This comic made me laugh out loud and tear up. Fully recommend if you can handle intense violence
