A thoughtful, introspective look at what it means to be kind and empathetic toward others, from the viewpoint of a child. A must-share for every classroom.
ETA: I shared with students, and many of their comments related to an appreciation that the book is concrete in sharing specific little things they can do to show kindness. The little gestures matter a lot. Another 4th grader said, "it's inspiring"

What does it mean to be kind?

This short but sweet picture book takes a beautifully accessible look at what things can show kindness and how that can change the world. A book easy to share with everyone you know! A great read aloud for classes!

It's easy to say 'be kind', but actually doing it can be another thing altogether and is often not that simple, and I like how this book portrays that. It's also about how one small action can cause a chain effect that sometimes comes back to us. What appears to be a little thing can make a huge difference!

With so many hard things weighing heavy on our hearts in today’s world, Be Kind teaches kids that kindness starts at home, in school, and in your community. Be nice to a friend, say hi to people and use their name if you know it, take care of your pets, or teach someone something new. I especially loved the picture of the girl taking care of Otis, the class guinea pig because it reminded me of my daughter’s class turtle that we are caring for this summer and he is adorable when he gets sweet potato all over his face. I also love where the author Pat Zietlow Miller writes “Maybe I can only do small things. But my small things might join small things other people do. And, together, they could grow into something big.” How do you teach your kids to be kind?
