I LOVE Kristin Cashore's Graceling trilogy, so I was beyond excited when she came out with a new book. I can't help but feel disappointed. This story, while an interesting concept, is very strange and a little confusing. I enjoyed the first two times the story was told, but after that it became so strange and unrelated to the rest that I had a difficult time understanding and enjoying it. They felt very out of place, and just kept getting weirder and weirder. By the fifth and final retelling, when she follows Jasper, I could hardly take the story seriously because of the nonsensical and unrelated world I was reading. Even after completing the book, I'm not sure that I know for sure what happened or what multiverse is the real one that Jane lives in. I would have enjoyed this a lot more if it had stayed a mystery novel with the missing paintings, spies, and the small pox plots, and that would have been the end.

Solid book. I loved the unique format, but definitely preferred some endings to other.

I LOVED this book so much. The concept was so fascinating, and the incorporation of different genres was brilliant. Each one was written so well, and it was so fun seeing the story slowly piece itself together throughout the different scenarios. It provokes such an interesting question about how choices impact our lives. Also, this book was so well thought out and all the details between the different stories were consistent. I’m a stickler for details, so I greatly appreciated that. I enjoyed every part of this book and found myself becoming interested in genres I typically wouldn’t be drawn to. I already want to re-read it to see all the hints and crossovers of the different timelines. This was truly a fascinating read.

I really enjoyed this book until Charlotte entered the picture. Anita and the portal to other dimensions put me off completely. It’s kinda jarring how late the sci-fi elements enter and consume the story.

Good but slightly unsatisfactory. From a certain point in the story, we follow the protagonist Jane down five alternative storylines which vary wildly from each other. The fact that I liked the first one the best and then decreasingly liked the following storylines tells me either that this format wasn’t for me or that it wasn’t Cashore’s finest work. I wonder if the different storylines can be read in another order.

I don't mind quirky/weird writing, but this is just not working for me at all. I'm not interested or intruiged in the slightest, and reading it feels like a major chore. I'm quitting this one.

I enjoyed this read so much!! It was creative and fun and mysterious and silly in the way that I remember books being as a child - very From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs Basil E Frankweiler, Magic Treehouse, Chasing Vermeer. I don’t remember those plots specifically but the general feeling of self discovery amidst the whimsy made me very nostalgic and happy.
