This book is heartwarming yet cute.. I love Tam's relationship with Nova... I love their bond. And cannot lie... even a lil bit complicated, this graphic novel is really really lovely and heartwarming and Nova as a deaf representation... ate in this book!

Very suitable for Disability December read!

i read this for my book club and really enjoyed it! Mooncakes is the perfect cozy fall read with witchcraft, a magic-filled bookstore, benevolent ghosts, the mid-autumn festival (hence the mooncakes), Halloween decorations, adorable black cats, and vivid outdoor scenes.

Great illustrations which made me feel immersed in the story and added to the fall vibes. Reminded me of a Midwest fall back in Michigan ❤️

Diverse representations of identity ( Non-binary character with they/them pronouns, Hard of hearing with use of hearing aids, WLW grandmas;1 is Chinese and 1 is Jewish, WLNB romance, and Chinese American characters celebrating their culture’s traditions). Each character’s identity is presented as integral parts of themselves, but not as anything that needs to be explained, questioned, or justified. It’s also shown without much conflict or trauma which I felt was important to show that books can have representation while also being happy and without the need to “prove” their identity is valid. Tam had to correct one of the Nanas once on pronoun usage but their identity was never put into question but just a fact of reality!

One thing I didn’t like was the insta love relationship between Nova and Tam. It happened very quickly and I would have liked to see a little more build up. The plot is also a bit surface level and more depth could’ve been nice; it just didn’t hold my interest as much. I was mostly just vibing with the general coziness and small moments between characters!

This is only the 2/3 graphic novel I’ve read my whole life so I went in with no expectations and enjoyed it quite a bit. I was smiling and awwwing at some of the panels 🥰  Overall a perfect read for autumn and recommend if you’re looking for a magical witchy/werewolf romance!

Oh my god PERFECT. There’s a freaking nblw witch x werewolf relationship are you kidding 😫😫😫

Tam is the corny nonbinary werewolf who doesn’t present excessively androgynous (they give me such gender envy. The hair, the piercings, their clothing style, the FANGS oh my god), they aren’t extremely skinny, and overall are just a beautiful multifaceted character from what I could see even in the shortness of this book. Their enby rep really means a lot to me. Nova is the witch, and she’s so lovely as well. I love her protectiveness of Tam and their relationship is adorable. The plot was lowkey interesting too!!! And the animals 😫😫 They remind me of the spirits in the spirit word in atla. I loved this book, such a fluffy happy quick read.

Mooncakes is a beautifully written and adorably illustrated fantasy graphic novel that has fantastic disability representation, LGBTQ+ representation, and diverse religious coexistence. It centers on Tam, Nova, Nova's grandmothers, and Nova + Tam's childhood friend Tat. I really enjoy Tat's characterization as a sceptic who is more than willing to learn about magic, in the hopes of making it make sense through her scientific studies in the future. The author and illustrator do a fantastic job fully fleshing out supporting characters like Tat, Nova's grandmothers, and the main antagonist to the point that the exceed their archetypes and become fully fleshed out characters. The world building is immaculate, and I adore the beauty and effort put into the backgrounds and the animals that are featured in the book. This overall has incredibly cozy vibes, I'm in it was an enjoyable read. I think the characters are a bit younger than I expected them to be when I started reading. The language used is simple and easy to consume.

Sweet, adorable coming of age tale about a bisexual Chinese American witch with hearing loss who lives with her (awesome) sapphic Jewish and Chinese American grandmas. She's reunited with her childhood friend (and first love) when they (a nonbinary werewolf) turns up trying to escape desperate, demonic plans. Warm family vibes, supportive friends and found family, helpful cats and forest spirits, great representation, funny bird-headed mishaps ... It's pretty delightful.
