I first read this book around 7th or 8th grade and I remember absolutely loving it. I decided to re-read it and see if it was as good as I remembered. The answer is yes and no.

This book is still a fun, entertaining read with good suspense throughout. It also has pretty cookie cutter characters. The good guys are GOOD and the bad guys are BAD. The main characters are also what are referred to as Mary Sues. Travis is ex-Delta Force, good looking and can kick your ass, and rich enough he doesn't need a job. Nora, despite a lifetime of emotional abuse, is as sweet as apple pie, adjusts to normal life in a few months, is a first class looker, and also inherits enough money to not need to worry about it. The lawyer and the vet are men willing to risk life, limb, and freedom to uphold their moral values.

So, if you want a quick entertaining read about a dog every kid would die to own and you don't mind one dimensional characters, Watchers is a fantastic book.

I reread this book - it's been over 20 years - and it was as good as I remember! I feel in love with Einstein again, I cried, and I finished the book happy!

I always love the writing of Koontz and this book was no exception. Great characters, suspenseful story line and more then enough plot changes to keep you guessing and glued. Each character is also really well developed, with interesting back stories leading to individual stories within. Well worth your time.

Apparently here on Goodreads people compete in mud-throwing at Koontz and obviously take great pleasure in smirking criticism of everything he ever wrote, which leaves me wondering why they bother reading his novels, since clearly they could do better job themselves. This is the fifth novel by Koontz that I gulped with greatest pleasure and there is no danger it will all become a blur, since its my personal favourite - I am unabashed and unrepentant animal lover, so this was a perfect book for me and "Einstein" completely stole my heart - every time he was in danger, I swore I will never read another Koontz novel if anything happen to him. Must also note that I was deeply affected with authors description of how the mind of "The Outsider" works and felt strange compassion for twisted creature destined to be unloved and lonely in his monstrosity. Read this with my dog snoring next to me and was constantly kissing her sleepy head, although she just yawned and gave me occasional fart in answer.

The author does a stellar job creating vivid scenes, but it is more of a Suspense novel than SciFi. The actual science is vague and simplistic. The book is packed full of literary tropes and way too much foreshadowing—which diminished major plot points and pulled me out of the story.
