This was a re-read.
I first read this book in junior high school and I remember I loved it. I was on a big horror kick at the time.
Almost 30 years later (holy shit, I am getting old), I still enjoyed it but I am a probably a bit more critical of it. It has more warmth and sentimentality than I remembered. The characters are pretty good and relatable for the most part, if a bit cliched and maybe a little too extreme, for example the protagonist is a melancholic retired real estate agent who just happens to be an ex delta force commando. Whatever, it was the 80's, I will cut the author some slack.
The main plot revolves around a super intelligent dog and a mutant monster that are psychically linked, there's a hitman who things he is getting closer to immortality with every life he takes, and a dueling sheriff and NSA agent who are best friends forced into conflict.
So overall its kind of a mess, but for the most part it works and is still fun. I'd recommend it.

This is my favorite book by Dean Koontz ... no contest! The only one I've re-read multiple times.
Dean Koontz is becoming one of my favorite authors of all time. His meticulous attention to detail, the way he weaves character stories and the intensity in which he builds up to each thrilling climax is tangible. I find myself cheering or yelling or talking back to the characters. Koontz makes me feel involved in his stories and deeply invested in his characters. There are certain authors that have a special gift for the art of story. Koontz is at the top of that list. Highly recommend this book - especially if you're a dog lover.

Picked this up in a sale and glad I did. New favourite author unlocked.
I don't like dogs, but felt compelled to finish this book since I'm doing it for a book club of sorts. You can definitely tell how dated this book is... It's a year older than I am... But it was fun anyway. Much, much longer than expected.
