I absolutely hated this book. It had been on my "to read" list for years and I thought I would listen to it before Halloween. I cannot tell you how much I hate this book without giving things away, but I'll try. The book was clearly written just to shock people. There are aggressive sexual interactions, assaults, racial slurs that made me (a half-black woman) extremely uncomfortable and they were very unnecessary, and the characters were not likeable (except for Ben). I truly struggled to get through this book and, if it wouldn't make me feel like a failure for giving up, I would've stopped reading after the first few chapters. This is one of those rare moments where I would tell people to just watch the movies. The book will make you wish you never started to read it. I don't believe in cancel culture, but I'm shocked this book wasn't canceled during all that craziness.

This is the first Stephen King I read. Obv, he would be a talented writer so I was really immersed and interested in the story from the beginning. All the characters were well built and each had a real impact on the story that was well shown. I haven't read too many 500+ books, but I can imagine the pace can be hard to maintain but King did a good job at it. There only a few parts which lost my interest but overall it was there. The storyline itself was good and had a lot to offer.
It can be triggering in severely categories and I felt I had to take take a breather at one point.

This book is crazy good. The way time is used as a narrarive tool is masterful and the titular villain is just amazing. The characters, oh I love them so much. It's really weird, in good ways and bad: some chapters felt like Stephen King was on acid while writing them in the best way possible, but it was very 'she breasted boobily' at times. There are few scenes that are quite heavy and disturbing though.
Mike's racial torment made me understand more why slurs can be so triggering. Also the sewer scene was so unnecessary and strange but at least it was only like four pages.

Stephen King writes like he’s never met a real human woman in his life. Characterization and description of the children (particularly the female lead) was very disturbing. A lot of unnecessary sexual content considering the main characters are 11-13 when it happens. Also there’s a child orgy in a sewer.
