I think this is the quickest DNF I've had. I knew the FMC was 18, but I was hopeful she would be mature for her age. Before the end of chapter one, I knew that wasn't the case. This child decides to throw herself at her bodyguard by taking her bikini top and bottom off to entice him while he's apparently did no more than "look" at her in a way that "is obvious he wants her." Seriously? She didn't think that perhaps she should start slowly, to see if he's receptive, before just undressing out of nowhere? FMC is too stupid to continue this one.

SUMMARY: (SPOILER WARNING)
Mia lived with her single mom for seventeen years of her life. But when her mom died, she met her dad and went to live with him. He's rich, but she doesn't know about the unsavory parts of his business. She does know that she has a guard on her 24/7. And she might have a bit of a crush on her bodyguard, Zeke.
When she is sent off to start college, Zeke goes with her. And while they are trying to fight their feelings for each other, Zeke is aware of the plans her father has for Mia. Plans to marry her off to the highest bidder.
Is there any hope of them being together? Or is it all a waiting game for her to be married off to someone else.

REVIEW:
Meh. I wasn't a big fan of this. I'm not super surprised since I have not really liked anything I've read by this author (J.L. Beck). But I had already bought it before I realized that, and I do like bodyguard romances. So I thought I'd give it a shot.
The story line isn't bad. I like the idea of Mia and her hot bodyguard Zeke wanting each other and it's forbidden because of her status and the fact that her father wants her to stay pure for her arranged marriage. The twist with Dean being a bitter result of one of Zeke's past hits was interesting too.
But the problem is that the story dragged on -- the pacing was too slow -- and the characters (especially Mia) weren't particularly likable.
Let's first talk about Mia. For someone who adamantly claims to be SO smart, Mia is really fucking stupid and naive. How can she not put two-and-two together about what her dad does? She never questions his "business" and what he does. She just accepts everything at face value and doesn't question anything. She's so dumb.
She also has absolutely no intuition about people. She just trusts everyone blindly without trying to feel out if they are skeezy or not. Dean was always weird and suss and she just got through saying she wouldn't care if she didn't see him again, then two seconds later she calls him to pick her up! Why didn't she call one of her normal friends to pick her up instead? Or an Uber! This was just stupid.
And let's talk about her "friends". The fact that her friends are constantly worrying about Zeke abusing her makes no sense. He has given absolutely no indication that he hurts her, but they are quick to come to that conclusion on their own. And when she tells them that's not true, they just reply that that's what someone who is being abused would say! Gah! There's no convincing them! How awkward and annoying.
Zeke was okay. I don't have much about him I didn't like. But I feel pretty neutral to him overall.
The sex was pretty hot when we finally got to it. But it took a little too long to get there for my preferences.
The ending wasn't very believable. Why would her father agree to Mia being "the face of his brand" so he can clean up his image when...he's a mafia don! This is absurd. He wouldn't care about that and I don't find it believable in the least that he would've had bowed to her wishes.
Overall it was just meh. Not great and not awful either. I can't say I'd recommend it, especially because it's not free on KU.

C. Hallman and J. L. Beck have once again creative a story that kept me turning the pages to read about Mia and Zeke. From the beginning of their interactions that we see there is chemistry. It loved how they pushed each other buttons to get underneath each other's skin and once it combusted, it got sizzling between them. I loved everything about this story (plot line, characters, steaminess). I can't wait to read more by the duo!
