Gorgeous collection of moving, gripping, eye opening and sometimes difficult to digest essays. I will revisit this one again.

This collection took my breath away as Black creators and storytellers embody their loved experience through the language of Brene Brown’s research to answer the question “What is the Black experience with shame resilience?” This book does an awesome job of calling out how many Black folks have struggled to see themselves in Brene’s work and how critical it is to engage the Black community in trauma healing and shame resilience. It is first and foremost a stunning honest picture of Black humanity that was humbling and an honor to read. As Tarana Burke says in the introduction, “I do not believe your anti racist work is complete or valid or useful if you have not engaged with Black humanity” and this collection is all about the raw complex and vulnerable experience of Black humanity. This is a must read for anyone who cares about the work of anti racism

I want to preface this review by saying, I’m not the target audience for this book. BUT, I really really loved some of these essays. They were very powerful and honest and vulnerable. Others, I didn’t feel fit the theme or were kind of disjointed. But I’m really glad I picked this up, so many good things here.

I loved this so deeply. And the audiobook was a perfect format for me to really connect with the essays. I loved hearing the essays in the authors' own voices. There were about two that didn't quite resonate with me and one in particular that felt completely off-topic. I was rolling my eyes so hard that it was dangerous to be driving and listening at the same time.

That one aside, I have enthusiastically shared this book with several folks, with a couple for whom I think I'm just going to buy it. Loved it. As heavy as it is, it's so necessary and timely.
