Very different from what I’d normally pick up, but I inhaled all of it in a day so clearly something went right!
I enjoyed all of the stories, but my favourite was probably Mono No Aware.

My Grading Score = 100% (S)

The connection that a parent and child can have with each other and the tragedy that can occur when there is a hard disconnect between the two is something that I feel was executed to a masterclass level here in the short story. There's not much that can be said that I feel would do justice to how great this short story is and how it was all portrayed, and I can understand why this won awards.

Verdict
The Paper Menagerie is one of my new favorite short stories of all time. I absolutely loved basically everything about it. It is very impressive that Ken Liu, in something that only lasted thirty-two pages, can make me feel a way that I couldn't fathom feeling with that length.

This was such a short story, and yet it was beautiful and moving. The Paper Menagerie is about how there is always something about us we want to run away from until we grow up and learn to love it. And how sometimes we despise our beautiful and magical parts in order to fit in. For Jack, he found out about the value of these too late.

Personally, I love stories that make you think, no matter how heartbreaking they are. How many times have I not put parts of myself or of those who loved me most in a box so that I could fit in? Specially when I was younger… I hope that I do better than Jack! I hope you do better than Jack!

I read this story on the subway, I was very calm while reading it & while I was on the last page, tears fell down my face. Quiet tears. I turned the page, the short story was over. I re read the last page, thinking, there has to be a mistake, there has to be more. There wasn't.
I think I understand why this story won so many prizes. I think it is well deserved.
