a beautiful story, but so sad.

If a story can make me cry it deserves five stars, and this one had me sobbing.

This is a devastating and beautiful tale that will tear at your heart. The zhezhi in the story represented the richness and beauty of the Chinese culture, and I adored it. It broke my heart to read of how Jack shunned his culture and his mother in order to fit in, and escape racism and prejudices. It's a tragic, but beautiful story that managed to affect me on a deep level. I hope many people read this because it is a story you will learn from.

You will cry.

Such a heartbreakingly beautiful story about love, culture, and art. I didn't know it was possible to say so much with such a small story. Amazing!

The Paper Menagerie tore my heart out, made me cry a river of tears, and made me go annoy spend time with my mum. I can't recommend this book enough. It's short but incredibly impactful in it's use of themes: identity, heritage, cultural assimilation and regret.

This story means so much to me, and I'm sure it will resonate with diaspora readers too.

one of my favourite short stories now. sort of cried haha

this short story made me full on sob in the library. the elements of fantasy were so good and it felt so natural to read about. the raw, yet extremely frustrating journey we see the main character go on as he learns to accept his culture and his mom was just too much for me in the moment.

“nobody understood me, and i understood nothing” is a quote that will haunt me forever.
