The pace made it a little hard to get into at first. Maybe I would’ve liked it more if I listened to it. But it’s kinda like nothing much was happening and then a lot was happening at the end. But I did like Isabel and Sirius a lot.

Too many reviewers said this book had practically no romance and just focused on gathering intelligence against the French. I have to ask: did we read the same book? Isabel and Sirius (okay didn't love all the Harry Potter comparisons in my head) were smitten and falling hard from chapter 1.
This dual third-person POV dealt with PTSD, guilt, shyness, and self -worth. Oh yeah, and racism, women's rights, and classism. But that's usual for a period romance; especially one with characters of color. There's also at least 3 quite spicy scenes between our lovebirds in some adorable (to them) locales.
I really liked their companionship, how Isabel shared with Gabby (to setup the 3rd book), and the not-quite-a-love-triangle with the nice guy. Think S3 of Bridgerton, y'all.
By the way, from hanging out with non-native fluent Spanish speakers, I thought the level of Spanish insertion into conversation was natural.

This was cute but ultimately forgettable. I appreciated how fiercely Isabel wanted to do good for her country and return to Mexico but she just does not make for a good spy. I wish there had been a little more success and failure in her information gathering, rather than one major drop that falls into her lap. I also wish there would have been further development of her friendship with the musician girl whose name I can’t be bothered to look up. Isa deserved a friend and it would’ve made for better payoff at the end.
Sirius isn’t my favorite MMC. The internal survivor’s guilt mostly frustrated me rather than making me sympathize with him. And someone else summed it up perfectly in their review: it took way too long to think of moving to Mexico, men are stupid. And he didn’t even think of it! One of the other guys did. Ugh.

Graphic: Racism, Sexual content, Colonisation
Moderate: Xenophobia, War
Why did it tale you so long to realize you could just move to Mexico? Men are stupid
