The Grand Sophy by Georgette Heyer

I normally enjoy Heyer for her humor and active, interesting heroines and this was no exception BUT. Ooff. Real Shylock situation with that evil money lender. He had and I quote a ‘Semitic’ nose?? Classics often slap you in the face with some kind of racism so I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised but honestly I was! It’s difficult for me to rate the book because the rest of it had a lot of merit as far as its treatment of women was concerned.

Until the antisemitic scene toward the end, I was totally on board with this book. There were many parts of it that I enjoyed (the quick-witted dialogue for one, and a fiesty, no-holds-bars heroine), and it is overall a fun book, but that scene is really not something I could get past. Specifically due to reading up about the antisemitic attitudes of this author.

Ah, now I know why Heyer is held in such great regard. An amazingly funny regency romp! I wonder if she ever wrote anything as good...

Set in the Victorian Era in England. A family's life is uprooted when the unconventional Sophy arrives. Sophy dares to do things like drive her cousin's team of spirited horses, manage her own money, and meddle in the affairs of her cousins who are on the marriage market. And good for them because Sophy has a lot of good sense and manages to make things come out right in the end. [return]This was a very enjoyable read, I could guess at how it would end way in in advance but it was so satisfying to see how Sophy managed it. I loved the main character's irrepressable charm and intelligence.
