Yiyun Li has this amazing ability to describe the things I’ve always wanted to put into words but never could. (There were so many lines from this book I wouldn’t mind tattooing on my face.) Her characters are so REAL—I wouldn’t be surprised to have passed them on the street without knowing it—and she takes you into their heads with poetic finesse. I can’t wait to read more of her novels.

A trio of friends haunted by a mysterious accident are the key characters in Yiyun Li’s new novel, Kinder Than Solitude. They all live within the same housing compound in Beijing, where life moves along without much disturbance, until an older girl living in one of their houses is overcome by a mysterious illness that later turns out to be chemical poisoning. She is not killed outright but her system is damaged irreparably, leaving her to die slowly over the next several decades with the mental acuity of a child and limited physical abilities. This mystery is the premise of the novel as Li writes of the characters from past to present. For Boyang and Moran their possible complicity in the poisoning colors the way they deal with their lives as adults. For Ruyu, a newcomer, there is no such confusion. A young orphan, raised by two older women who are fervent practitioners of their own version of Catholicism, she is preternaturally composed but whether this is her nature or her upbringing is unclear.

Yiyun Li is so skilled at crafting a perfectly enigmatic character. All three protagonists are well drawn but Ruyu is at another level. She's an enthralling character that I'll be thinking about for years. Kinder Than Solitude is another brilliant novel from Li, who plays with tropes of plot structure so beautifully. Like Yeo-sun's Lemon, it seems to be a whodunit at first before veering into a more complex and beautiful story. Highly recommend.

I'm not entirely sure I liked this book, but I respect this book.
It's very well-written, though in a type of omniscient narrator idiom that I don't encounter often. It's a very knowing narrator, full of bleak aphorisms. This fits the characters well, since the three central protagonists are all disconnected from themselves and their lives. Someone has to be able to describe their interiority, and it's not them.
The plot hinges on a mystery, sort of, but it's really just a tale of how lives can be lived. It's easy to see these characters as ciphers, and less comfortable to consider how we might be a little cold and heartless ourselves (Oh, just me? Oh, okay).
Though I didn't precisely enjoy the book, I'm going to get another by the same author, as I find her style intriguing, and would like to see what her other books sound like. (Oh curse my fallible memory, I apparently have already read another book, and found it similarly inexplicable yet unenjoyable. Third time's the charm?)

Xuyên suốt cuốn sách, tính trung tính trong cách nhìn nhận, đưa ra nhận xét hay đúc kết những điều hiển nhiên là cách tốt nhất để vươn đến gần được sự tàn bạo. Dựa trên nền móng của tính trung tính, sự suy tàn này mặt khác còn được cho thấy bằng lối mỉa mai, châm biếm, lạnh lùng và xa cách. Đó có thể là giọng văn giễu nhại khinh thường sự đời, mà cũng có thể là một kiểu dark comedy cho một vở kịch đậm tính đương đại.
