I read this book and then watched the 2005 movie with Alexis Bledel in preparation for an audition for a local theatre production of the musical. . I almost DNFed it but powered through. The progression of the plot is very slow. My favorite character was probably Jesse.

This is a very good book for young readers. It will get them thinking about mortality, morality, justice, and what life means or can be made to mean. I'd have students write a follow-up chapter that happens in the present: Are the Tucks still moseying along in their wagon, or have they started to learn and grow?

Rereading for Girls Read book club, October 2015.
