As expected, Elise Kova is the queen of cliff-hangers
Still very interesting and consistent. It’s good that the characters from the Air Awakens series did not have much impact (altho they are present) in this story. It makes Vi’s story a separate and important one.
The ebook copies I have have spelling and punctuation errors (although its from amazon itself). The books still have a hard time following the “show don’t tell” rule of writing and is very repetitive of adjectives (not really a problem but if its in consecutive paragraphs, you’ll start to notice). Nonetheless, Elise Kova improves with every book and series she writes

Classic middle book for me. Lots of world building but it was a bit slow at times to prepare for the rest of the story. I am interested to see how things go back in time and rebuild!
Much better in my opinion to the first two. Failed Future managed to expand on a lot of the dynamics of the story from world building to expanding the magic system. I also think this benefited from being paced very well. Sometimes I feel like with these books there is an explosive beginning, then there is a big lag in the middle, and finally reach a turning point at the end.
I said in my last two reviews that I was very keen to see the direction the story was going to take and I very proud to say that Failed Future really proved through for me in that regards. There were also some great character moments throughout which is great to see because I haven't fully cared for them. However it was nice to see some struggle and not convenience. You kind of get the sense that there is no hope for this world and these characters. That ending though was a nice direction to go in. I mean I particularly like the trope that was used if done correctly and in the sense of this book, definitely the right call.
I am proud to see Elise Kova grow as an author. I might not always die hard love her books, but they are so much fun. Time to see how the story plays out in book four!

WTF.... Just when I thought this series couldn't surprise me... Elise where are you going with this I'm so scared!!?!?!?
I am reeling with soo many emotions after finishing this book. Finally, Vi and Taavin, are together taking on the world. We are introduced to new magical elements, and everything we knew about the world is torn and reformed as new things come into the light.
We really see Vi step up from the girl we had known in the first book to someone new, with each new challenge she learns to step up and fight.
Who is she to you?
Everything
...And I died
Just like always Elise builds the relationship slowly..to the point that we begin to care and then suddenly we are in love. And that's when the pain starts.
Soo damm good!! I want the next book!! October is soo far away!!!

I was sent this book as an advanced copy by the author for reviewing purposes, but all opinions are my own.
Third books in long series are always a turning point and this one was as well, in more ways than one.
In the first half of the book there was a lot I liked. Kova's ability to introduce new characters and make them interesting right off the bat is something that works really well at the beginning of new series or, in this case, when our main character is somewhere new and has to make new connections.
However, the rest of the book was a little boring to me despite the fact that it was rather fast paced, or maybe that's why, since I enjoy a bit more focus on characters and relationships. But I might have honestly just not been in the mood for this, because I was also bored with Vi and Taavin's relationship since it took more page time than the prequels. I did enjoy some moments of course and I was able to focus on the final 20 pages more than I did for the second half of the book.
And that brings me to the ending (no worries, no spoilers from me). I think what Kova did in this book is very brave and I'll be able to fully process what happened in this book when I read the next, but it's certainly taken a turn I'd have never seen coming. I'm still not entirely sure what it all means for the rest of the series and for our view of Air Awakens, but I'm very curious to see what will happen next.
Speaking of Air Awakens, I truly believe that while it's not necessary to read it for the first two books of this series, there will be a lot of connections that are lost if you haven't read the original series. Especially going into the next books, I fully recommend catching up with the first series if you haven't done so already.
