Pepper always slays. I’ll put my full review on the last book in the trilogy, as per my usual.
This book starts off with a lot of imagery to set the stage, and because of the world building right at the start of the book, it started out a bit slow for me. However, I had full faith in Pepper to get me hooked, and of course when our two characters met, she got me! I’m diving into book 2 immediately.
This feels very much like a Beauty and the Beast retelling with a human trafficking theme, and I am here for it! This story deals with heavy topics (and I’m sure that book two will go even deeper), so please check your triggers. Pepper’s dark romances are not for those unsure if they can handle the content or not.

This was underwhelming. I didn't have any expectations going into this book but the premise definitely held promise so I thought it would be more of a ride. It just didn't work out for me.
A new dark and alluring world from Pepper Winters? UHM YAS PLEASE.
As with all Pepper Winter stories, prepare to suspend some disbelief and strap in for a wild ride. The premise, like all Pepper stories, is equal parts unusual and gripping. Youtube climber and adrenaline junkie Gemma finds herself literally lost in the woods while searching for her next great climb. She stumbles upon what appears to be a long deserted mansion, only to find the long isolated and practically feral Kas inside- who quickly decides to make her his captive.
We have some super interesting characters- a feisty and strong willed heroine in Gem paired with a pretty classic PW hero in Kas- a scared and long-ago traumatized man who has transmuted the prior horrors of his identity into his own defensive shield - the classic be destroyed by the monsters or become one persona. He’s deranged and unhinged, and this foils beautifully with his fierce trespasser now captive. Yet they both somehow find themselves captive to each other- in an infuriating and volatile mix of passion and hate. Beauty and the isolated beast- but there is a lot more ugly lurking around than beauty. A lot of despair and pain instead of happiness.. They are challenging- both make bizarre and frustrating decisions, and at times they felt almost suffocating. The first leg of their journey is tortured, combustible and, as always, loaded with that edgy eroticism that makes Pepper’s stories so yummy.
I’ve certainly read darker fare by Pepper, though Kassian’s past and their current arrangement leaves the door open for a deeper jump into darker water. What I’ve always loved about Pepper stories is how skillfully she dances along the line of fantasy vs. nightmare, reality and illusion- and the unique ways in which she helps characters find happiness and centeredness right on that line- the beauty in the nightmare, the tortue of a dream.
You should know by now- there’s a big cliffy, and I’m so curious to just what is going to be in store for this volatile couple next!
incroyable
Fable of expletives maybe. I’m not sure I had it in me to finish this one since the back and forth was maddening. I felt like I was stuck in the concussion with Kassan.

Common sense isn’t so common, I guess. If I have to summarize this sequel in one word: idiotic. The heroine’s decision making skills are basically nonexistent. Why did I keep on reading this
This was such a beautiful ending to such a fucked up story. The trio of books that make up the fable of happiness was actually really hard for me to get through but I am very glad I finished them. Cas grew so much as a character and bringing light to those with trauma and fear of the world that i was able to tap down into some of the things I had gone through as a child. I think that's the point though. Pepper Winters is a master when it comes to character development and I dont think I've read anything from her that I've hated. If you haven't read this series, please read the triggers. It was a very rough read but so worth it.

This is a start if a new series and wow ms Winters has hit it out the park. I devoured this story and need more. So good
This story is more intense than the first one. I liked that it focused solely on Gem and Kas. Their on-off relationship was interesting to read. The second half of the story was my favorite. I could see that Kas wanted to get better but was also angry about his past. Oh, and I loved the way their feelings showed here.
This story is intense, so I needed to take breaks along the way. Then would come back and listen to some more. I love the narration of Tor and Charley. I love how the story feels so real while I listen. It is unique and different. Which is always nice as I love a variety of stories. On to the # 3 in the trilogy.
