“Secrets, they have so much power.” One of the best lines in the book. This story of a young girl moving to the US as a young immigrant and all the trauma associated with trying to hide their immigration status.
It is hard to imagine all the pain but the author tells the story with such detail and the reader feels they are sitting next to her trying to understand what the teachers are saying.
A great story with so many messages.

Talk about a book that’ll make you feel grateful for every single thing you take for granted, and also make you wanna move Canada.

I enjoyed this memoir a lot. While it will leave you with some questions about what was really going on with some of the adults, it reads as a brutally honest account of what it's like growing up undocumented in the US. Wang's writing is straight-forward but evocative, and the memoir is well-paced such as to give you enough details to have a firm image of little Qian and her life in your mind, without letting itself get bogged down.

Are you white? Read this.
This is the second book in my entire life that I hugged after completion. I was hooked on every single word until the very last.
You’ll experience the heartbreaking yet soul -warming story of a Chinese immigrant girl in white America. The story is told through the eyes of a magical, imaginative, inquisitive child who is dreadfully impoverished, uncomfortable, and hungry… but through the shield of both her mother (and sometimes her father) and her childlike wonder, she finds ways to enjoy childhood as she knows no other way than how she lives.
I feel so angry at her teachers and her school for criticizing her and allowing children to make fun of her instead of asking if her family needed help. I was disgusted by the lack of concern for her well-being from any adult surrounding her who could clearly see through her “Everything’s fine, this is all I know of the world” demeanor, yet did absolutely nothing except treat her like an outsider.
As us white people actively unlearn inherent racism through reading and listening to the experiences of marginalized/BIPOC people, adding this to your reading list is a MUST. Qian’s story happened recently and stories like hers are still happening right now.

This story touched my heart - and made me tearful at times, and also so proud of this young, brave child. I wish more people would learn these stories, these lives, and open their hearts in the USA, today more than ever. So much to gain from others, and nothing to fear. Turn off the news, put your phone down, and pick up this book! I read some of it, but also had the
audiobook when on the move. The authors narrating made it even better.
