We are reading this book for our library book group this month and I was reluctant to read it because I teach history in a local community college and I thought that I knew quite a bit about D-Day. It turns out that I was both right and wrong. I knew the history and significance of the day, but the stories of the individuals who participated were incredibly moving. I highly recommend this book.

Amazing story of D-Day, based on personal accounts of American, British, French and German participants.

Watch the movie too! It's amazing.

This is a very interested view of D-Day, with the sprawling narrative that you'd expect from future works like "Band of Brothers". Very recommended for WWII fans.

One of the best written accounts of the D-Day landings. The book focuses entirely on the hours before and the day of the assault. Published in 1959, just a decade and a half after the landings, the book relies on accounts of the participants as well as a trove of military documents.

The book is excellent and provides a detailed account of the invasion. The only thing missing, in my opinion, is a map (or two) to orient the reader as to location of the beaches and the intended (and actual) landing areas. Maps including the key bridges captured early in the fight as well as the location of Pointe du Hoc. Having visited some of these locations in person, including Omaha Beach and Pointe du Hoc I was able to visualize some of what the author was discussing. That said, maps would help even more.

4.5 stars… An amazing book covering maybe the most important day in WW2. The work done by Cornelius Ryan in compiling all of these accounts is mind blowing. The segments preceding the storming of the beach (The Wait and The Night) were exciting too, which I did not expect going in. This might be important to some people since The Day doesn’t come into play until the last 3rd of the book.

The opening scene of Saving Private Ryan is perhaps the greatest and most visceral war scene in the history of film. This book proves that 20 mins does not do the story justice. It would be hard to imagine anything braver than the men who stormed the beach - many of whom gave their life and knew going in that the mortality rate could be 80% - 90%. Many of those accounts only survive today because of this book.
