Cecelia Ahern

4.05 AVERAGE

I felt nervous and scared the whole time I spent reading this book (a few hours). There's a lot of drama and romance, I enjoyed the love triangle though I always hated Art and fell in love with Carrick from the beginning. A very enjoyable reading and a very interesting story.

I don’t know what happened with these books. I usually really like Cecelia Ahern’s books for adults. But this duology is just weirdly bad. It reads like it was written by a kid in junior high. The things that happen are ridiculously convenient. The “good” things Celestine does are super unimpressive. The surprises at the end aren’t so much evidence of Celestine’s being smart as just really obvious plans that she would have been really stupid not to do. It’s like the books were written, but no one went through and critiqued them for the author before they were published. Isn’t there an editor at some point in the process that says, “This is a good idea, it just needs to be fleshed out a bit”?

I cant believe i actually remembered all the details of the last book after all this time. It was a very satisfactory ending.

This is a review of the whole duology but it does not contain spoilers
I have always been a fan of Cecelia Ahern (despite not being a fan of romance or contemporary), mostly because of her unique ideas and her writing style. So, naturally, my expectations for her first YA series may have been a bit too high. And while I did enjoy this series quite a lot, it was still somewhat disappointing.

Flawed is an engaging and thought-provoking cautionary tale of what happens when we persist on achieving perfection and how in trying to accomplish that goal, we (ironically) become even more imperfect. It shows how in the future, our society forgets the importance of empathy, compassion and forgiveness by ruthlessly rooting out anyone who has ever made a mistake--knowingly or unknowingly and definitely disregarding context--and therefore been branded as a Flawed and cast out.

At first this may sound like an unoriginal concept but Ahern sends a truly beautiful and important message throughout the two books, one we forget more often than we care to admit: it is okay to make mistakes. And she does this with an easy to read yet captivating narrative style that had me turning the pages. There were several moments when I couldn't help but be moved to tears, when I felt outraged and heartbroken as I read about the unfair, cruel treatment of the Flawed, of the system itself.

However, even though the writing style and the plot held my interest from beginning to end, I couldn't help but think that the writing style was...overly simple. Normally, that isn't always a bad thing, but this story would have been more memorable and would have more impact on its readers if Ahern had used the same storytelling skills that she had used in her previous novels.

Furthermore, the characters were two-dimensional--it was extremely difficult for me to connect with any of them because none of them any personality or depth to them whatsoever. Well-developed characters are crucial in every story; it is important that the main and the supportive characters are real enough for the readers to care about their story. And that was one of the things that was missing here.

To put it in a nutshell: this duology was good, I really enjoyed it, but it's not the kind of story that I would ever remember or cherish.
