Three and a half stars. A mystery laced with gothic undertones.

Sam and Miguel have nothing in common, except their search for the truth in the small town of Illthwaite.
But digging for well kept secrets in a town were no one really wants them to be found, can be dangerous.

We don't know which stories to believe and who to trust, and fear for the two main characters' life through the whole book. Lots of suspense. Great story.

Very first page talks about year old girl starting her period. Why?

I enjoyed this book, my only criticism would be the narrators attempt at an Australian accent. With that being said, I enjoyed the characters and once the story had been established I could wait to find out how it ended.

hmm, trying to figure out if i already read this.... yup, i read this a few years ago but i still really enjoyed it the second time--it was familiar but i didn't remember enough details to give the mystery away. reginald hill is one of my favorite mystery writers. he's a good writer, his plots are interesting, twisty and compelling, characters well-wrought, quirky and likeable, and there's some dark humor throughout done with a light touch. love his dalziel and pascoe series, and this stand alone novel was quite good too.

Very entertaining and well-written, part English history and part mystery with touches of gothic atmosphere... A very enjoyable read!
