Type of read: Lunch time read.

What made me pick it up: Here's the deal, sometimes you just need an easy read for lunchtime or appointment waiting or those little moments where you can sneak in a few pages, Nancy Drew is just that. As a child of the 90s, I grew up on Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys. These were the books that taught me how to read and adventure through pages. It's been fun revising the Nancy Drew series.

Overall rating: As I reread through the Nancy Drew series, I'm not going to rate them or provide a detailed review. I'm simply reading these because it makes me happy and makes me think of simpler times. I will always recommend books like Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Box Car Children, Babysitters Club, Goosebumps, Animorphs, and so on as those are the books that drew me into reading and kept me excited to continue turning pages.

I loved the side characters in this one, especially Miss Flora. The villain, Nathan Gomber, was a quintessential cartoon villain. I really expected him to say “I’d have gotten away with it if it wasn’t for that meddling girl”. 😂 The stakes are definitely higher in this one, with missing fathers and more physical danger, but the plot was still ridiculous. The pacing is also tedious. 75% of the book is slow, with the big reveal coming in at the last 5-10%. Even for such a short book, the story drags.

Shortly after the Secret of the Old Clock case, Nancy finds herself itching for a new mystery. (Un)luckily for her, she gets two: the first in the form of a haunted house, the second in the form of a threat against her father. That second one is not so delightful.

Nancy Drew on audio, it's automatically good. But did Keene really have to title the books after the solution to the mystery?

Good, but a little too complicated.

Short Review: So probably not the smartest idea to include the "twist" in the title of the book, just saying. This book opens with Nancy almost dying, and in the same way Nancy almost saw the person in book 1 almost dying... hm. Put that aside. Helen is still planning her wedding, but nothing every really happens with that, like at all, other than the mention of the boy we haven't even met yet.... The people think a ghost is stealing their shit, yah that's logical, and asked Nancy to help. Some crazy dude warns Nancy about it thou and pretty much threatens her dad. Dad goes missing, big surprise. All is well at the end thou, trend much.
