I DID NOT KNOW THIS WAS NOT A DUOLOGY AND NOW I HAVE TO WAIT A YEAR OR TWO FOR THE NEXT BOOK AFTER THAT ENDING?

I am so into this series. It's not for everyone for it's a 'hack and whack' which cranks up the violence by taking insults to new adult levels (simply because the old everyday ones won't do) and often with dark humor. What appeals to me about this intricate vampire tale that moves swiftly despite its length (this volume is a little over 700 pages) is the passion that drives this tale. It's vital to read the first book in this series, Empire of the Vampire, and the author has kindly caught readers up to date in the beginning of this book from the first volume - something I appreciated since I read the first book back in 2021. The important things to know about this book is it's an elaborate world where there are various vampire factions, half vampires that hunt those vampires, shape shifters (who can only move between a particular animal and human forms), and humans trapped in a world that is becoming colder and dying. There are characters who have suffered greatly and still struggle on. Losses are terrible and still they continue. From the additional storylines in this second book, the drinking of blood and its effects is an analogy for addiction and it's addiction of the worst kind. I'm sure this sounds like a terrible experience, but I love this tale where the characters can snatch some moments of happiness and hope in all this. My rating is 5 stars because reading this series is truly an amazing experience.

I looked up the synopsis of the first book to show my friend and learned it's supposed to be a part of a trilogy. I am both thrilled and horrified; shouldn't this much suffering heaped one character be illegal? *sighing while tightening my metaphorical belt* I'll be here for the ride.

We get not only the continuation of Gabriel and Dior's story but also a more complete picture of Gabe's current circumstances. I feel that the culmination of both storylines will be tied up in rather rapid succession in the next book. The pieces are all falling into place.

Also, the artwork in the book is amazing.

I am hooked. Gimme book #3, please!
