An excellent follow-up to the first book in the series, the stakes are higher, the world seem darker and more bleak than ever, while the action, the funny jokes and the character moments are even better than in the first book. The second book presents us with a new PoV, which expands the world and gives an alternative story since we get to follow both Gabriel and the new person as well as their inner toughs. Many things are darker and almost awful to read at times, since so many people suffer. At the same time, we get moments when people fight back and find something to hope for again, even in the middle of the darkest night. I continued to enjoy Gabriel as a main character, his telling of the story with the historian, as well as his relationship with Dior, Celene and some other new and old allies. The new PoV was good also, while I missed Gabriel's PoV at times. But in many ways, this book was as good as, if not even better than the Empire of The Vampire. Looking forward to the next book!

It's been awhile since a fantasy story completely sucked me in the way this one did. I repeat the sentiment from the review of book one, holy shit. The characters, the plot, the banter, the humor, the soul crushing and mind shattering ending. And now we wait. I HATE THE WAITING!!!!!!! Book three please come ASAP!!!!

"'That's the way to wisdom, vampire. The wise man learns more from his enemies than the fool from his friends, but even a fool can learn if his friends are willing to call him one. Surround yourself with folk who confront you. If you're not being challenged, you're not learning anything. If you're the smartest man in the room, you're in the wrong fucking room.'" (pg 384)

"'But don't ye see? We don't get broken. We're made broken. We are not whole alone. But if we're blessed, if we're brave, we might find those few whose edges fit against our own. Like pieces of the same puzzle, or shards of the same shattered blade. Those people who, in their own broken was, make our broken edge complete.'" (pg 446)
