I NEED the next one NOW. A pure masterpiece. It's one of the best written vampire books I've ever read. It is just as spectacular, if not BETTER, than the first. It's in my top 5 favourite ever series.
The twists and turns. The ENDING! Very interesting use of unique names for characters and places. The relationship between Gabriel and Dior is similar to that of Geralt and Ciri from the Witcher. In fact, the whole series from the beginning has given me Witcher vibes, which I love.

Empire of the Damned is a lore heavy book compared to the first that might take an extra minute to wrap your head around. There's twists and turns that honestly made me second guess my theories. It was definitely worth the long read.
È migliore del primo, ma resta un lavoro che si adatta poco alle mie corde. La violenza e il linguaggio scurrile qui vengono ridimensionati, mentre trovano spazio le scene sessuali (il libro stesso si apre con scene erotiche esplicite). Si aggiunge una nuova voce narrante, ma ovviamente lo stile di narrazione scelto da Kristoff non subisce variazioni. Mi sento di dire che o lo si ama, o lo si odia. E io certamente non l'ho amato.
A livello di trama, mi pare di aver notato meno rimandi ad altre opere di intrattenimento famose (ricordo che il primo ripercorre, a mio avviso di proposito, il noto videogioco The last of us), e questo mi ha ovviamente fatto piacere. Se l'originalità non è fondamentale per la buona riuscita di un libro, per lo meno si richiede che non segua fedelmente altre storie.
Ho avuto l'impressione che questo libro non aggiungesse nulla, veramente, alla trama: in 700 pagine ci saranno sì e no 2 rivelazioni, i dialoghi talvolta sono molto imbarazzanti e trash, così come alcune scene - e ho il dubbio che Kristoff puntasse a farle sembrare epiche, non trash. Se fosse voluto, invece, è perfettamente riuscito nel compito e dovrei rivedere la valutazione.
I vampiri sembrano sempre meno temibili. Fanno cose atroci, ma la loro persona è poco credibile. Hanno letteralmente un impero e non si capisce come siano riusciti ad ottenerlo, essendo così disorganizzati e a tratti proprio poco svegli.
Nel mio gusto, non mi sento di consigliare la saga.

Sangue, sudore e lacrime sono stati versati per leggere questo libro: sangue per i tagli sulle dita dati dalla velocità in cui giravo le pagine; sudore per il peso di reggere il libro durante la lettura e lacrime perché Jay Kristoff si nutre di quelle dei suoi lettori, a quanto pare.
In questo secondo volume continua la narrazione di Gabriel degli eventi che hanno portato alla morte del Re Sempiterno e del Graal di Santa Michon, a lui si unisce anche la sorella Celene ed entrambi accompagnano il caro Jean Francois nella stesura della sua opera.
Gabriel è sempre il solito stronzo, Jean si diverte a stuzzicarlo e Celene un po' parla al singolare e un po' al plurale mentre odia tutto e tutti.
Ho trovato i personaggi più maturi rispetto al precedente, soprattutto Dior e anche Gabriel ha avuto qualche cambiamento che mi ha sorpreso. La cosa che ho amato di più, però, è l'evoluzione del rapporto tra Gabriel e Dior. Mi sono commossa più di una volta.
In questo capitolo ritroviamo vecchi amici, ne facciamo di nuovi, muore una fracca di gente, sangue come se piovesse, squartamenti, violenze, pianti, disperazioni e tutto quello che ci si aspetterebbe da un libro di Kristoff.
Mi è piaciuto tutto di questo libro? Meh, non proprio. Alcune scelte non mi hanno entusiasmata, ma non mi hanno neanche impedito di godermi la lettura.
Ora, chiaramente, non vedo l'ora di leggere il prossimo, anche se so che piangerò mille volte e che morirà un sacco di gente.

I loved all the stuff in the frame story this time around, the sexual tension...the REVEAL of another narrator, the LAST TWIST.
The ships also were really shipping in this one: Aaron and Baptiste, Gabriel and REDACTED, Dior and REDACTED.
I think the last 100 pages or so of this is the most exciting fantasy fiction I have ever read I BLASTED through it, hot damn.
Book 3 ASAP!!
