Returning to the world of Empire of the Vampire, readers will find that Gabriel and Dior's story does not get easier. They are faced with ruthless challenges that neither of them were prepared for. All seems lost within the endless night.

Jay Kristoff's writing has improved immensely. I was drawn into his prose and became lost in the world he has created so carefully. Every detail has been factored in with each character's progression. The unique style of this series has captivated me and leaves me yearning for more.

Without giving too much away, there are other characters who we get to know more of. There stories are equally as important to the overall mission and never felt out of place or confusing. The relationships they develop is emotional and concrete. Readers will hope for their favorites to survive and they will be satisfied with how they mature with their dangerous choices.

Readers who chose the series for its dark atmosphere, no hope can be found, eccentric vampires, and gruesome, toe curling descriptions will find nothing was lost in the second book. Truth be told, it has escalated.

Empire of the Damned is a formidable sequel to the series and the ending will leave readers agonizing for the next installment.
