Overall I enjoyed the first book better than this one, to be honest. If you haven't read the first book, definitely read that one first. This book won't make much sense otherwise.
This book had a similar issue to the first one - there's a lot of skipping around. I don't think it was difficult to keep the characters organized in my head. But it was jarring to constantly be going back and forth between locations and characters and what they were doing at certain times. I think it was intended as a very creative way to tell the story and in some ways I found it creative. But other times, it was a bit exhausting. I did enjoy getting to know Celene's character much more though.
Similarly with the first book, I also felt like the first half of this one was not very interesting. It felt like a lot of things were happening but there wasn't really true action yet, and I wasn't as invested in what was happening. Then in the second half, it definitely picked up and got very interesting.
This books is VERY long so I think it's hard to get through it if you aren't truly invested in the plot and characters.
The ending - I really really did not like the ending. I was under the impression that more of the story would be wrapped up and it was not. Little mysteries and stuff like that were resolved. But it's clear there needs to be a third book. Even at that though, the ending was completely rushed. Like, to the point where I was surprised this got past an editor and an editor didn't insist on changes before it was actually published. The ending just left me extremely confused and there's many ways the author could have made it not quite so abrupt, and still leave you on a nice cliffhanger to want to read the third book (whenever that comes out).
Anyway, overall I read this book because I wanted to see where these characters go. I was a bit disappointed, but maybe I just had high expectations from the first one.

an absolutely incredible sequel that cements this series as an all time favorite! i absolutely loved the second half of this and found the last 200 pages to be especially riveting. the way kristoff builds his worlds is so immersive to me and i love loosing hours upon hours in these books. his writing is at the height of his career right now. it is absolutely gorgeous. the emotional payoff and reveals towards the end were incredible. i also just love the characters so much. dior is such an incredibly well written protagonist and gabe is my fav as always. celenes addition this story was 10/10 and she is THAT BITCH. i just really appreciate how kristoff is able to introduce new villains and allies and have the reader have immediate attachment to them. i’m eagerly awaiting the third book
-Audio book-
I got confused with the time line a couple of times but I think it was because it was audio. I definitely will be purchasing the books.

I will be accepting all sorts of emotional and financial support at this time as I try to figure out how to survive until the next book comes out.
