This is a masterpiece of a book and I'm SO annoyed that I paused reading this over Christmas and New Year and denying myself the ending.
EoTD follows Gabriel, Dior and Liathe as they continue on their quest for an ending to Daysdeath and the rule of Vampires. I am keeping my review spoiler-free but there's everything I loved from EoTV - betrayal, love, battle, plotting, with beautiful world-building and portrayal of complicated relationships.
As usual, the writing is gorgeous and some of the quotes are just stunning. I really enjoy how each character speaks so differently, and the blend of different accents and languages creates a unique setting.
I read this as a buddy read and I loved leaving little comments about my favourite quotes and moments while I was reading it. A good 80% of my comments are me fawning over Gabriel (Baebriel, indeed) but that's to be expected, right? ๐๐ท๐ฆ๐ฏ ๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ฏ ๐๐ณ๐ข๐ฏ๐ค๐ฐ๐ช๐ด ๐ด๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ด ๐ต๐ฐ ๐ฉ๐ข๐ท๐ฆ ๐ข ๐ต๐ฉ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ ๐๐ข๐ฃ๐ฆ.
The ending was incredible, and heart-breaking, and I'm waiting with bated breath for Book III - the finale of the series.

Damn I love this empire. I canโt deny that I love this series. The characters are well-developed, its twists are unpredictable, and the world is rich in lore. Whatโs not to enjoy? Vampires, blood magic, and of course Jean, my nasty little son. Great way to start a year of reading.

THAT ENDING are you freaking kidding me??? Jay Kristoff emotionally eviscerated me all over again with this gloriously dark, bloody storyworld and its deeply damaged leading man. I was obsessed with the vampires, the politics, the battles and betrayals and the enormously complicated relationships. And the plot twists โ THE PLOT TWISTS, my word. I might have permanent bruises from the number of times this book sucker-punched me.
I could say about โEmpire of the Damnedโ what I said about โEmpire of the Vampireโ: I never totally swallowed that Gabriel was essentially writing a book out loud, and I couldโve done with less crudity. The writing, while absolutely beautiful, became long-winded at times, and the storyโs pacing dragged in a few places. But once again, Iโm compelled to give five stars for sheer emotional impact. This is the kind of intensity I crave while reading, and itโs going to be an excruciating wait for book three!

Filled with peril and plenty of grim situations with your favorite characters. It deals with grief and death as well as the bond of those who have committed to each other for a common goal.
This builds on the first and keeps you hooked the whole time. Endless action and journeying with plenty of cut ins to the present day. I am looking forward to the next addition to this universe because I cannot get enough!
