I love how Blain manages to mix so much humor and absurdity into what would otherwise be a very dark urban fantasy.
This book had a lot of the same humor and magical hijinks that I liked about the first one. However, I think something happened with the editing process, because this book was super bloated. I found myself skipping half of the dialogue because it was so long and convoluted and didn't really add anything to the story. There were also several passages that were inexplicably repeated, like the author forgot she already wrote it before. This story could easily have been told in a short novella, not a full-length novel.

3+ stars. I liked it but didn’t love it. The first one was soooo good. I liked the world building in this and the male main character but the female main character felt flat and 2-dimensional. It also went from stranger to mate in too little time.
The story and characters are fun but the romance doesn’t feel like an important element to the plot. Could have had a few tweaks and been amazing.
But still a fun, low-stress read.

This book was a lot of fun, just like the first one, "Playing With Fire." The books are stand-alone but set in the same magical world. There are a lot of interesting characters and the book is fairly long without dragging, full of snark and some romance without getting explicit. An enjoyable read. I can't wait for the next book.
I. Freaking. Loved. This. Book! Shane being all gallant for Marion. Ernesto! Shane's parents! The quips! The battle! Oh my god, the battle!
My fave of the series... so far! I want more Ernesto and Bai Bao Chen!

I have come to expect 3 things from an RJ Blain book - good fun, a lot of silliness and at least 15 chapters too long. And this one delivers all 3 in spades and though it lacks any laugh out loud moments it was still amusing.
