If there’s one this this series did continuously, it was break my heart. And this last book did not fucking disappoint. My heart aches for everyone but especially Maven. I understand it had to end that way but somehow I still had that small glimmer of hope that everything was going to work out. I think the series ended just as it should have. With Mare and her sister.

Well, at least some people know how to finish a series, unlike HBO

This was an enjoyable conclusion to the Red Queen series. I enjoyed the character development. I also found it refreshing to see characters in a YA novel putting their values and beliefs (or anything really) before their romantic relationships and hormonal urges. The variety of perspectives in this book (extending from the previous one) was a great way to see what was going on with different characters and places while avoiding annoying info dumps and exposition. The ending felt a bit abrupt, with a few secondary plot threads still loose. It wasn't all sunshine and roses but it wasn't totally angsty either. It felt fairly realistic, which was intellectually satisfying but emotionally disappointing. That said, I didn't find myself TOO upset with the ending, with the Broken Throne novellas still left.

Honestly, I had trouble getting through this one. While there were some external factors involved, I can't say it has nothing to do with the book itself. I really didn't care for Iris and her pov at all, and I had only begrudgingly accepted Evangeline's perspective so to have so much of the book be their povs really just didn't do it for me. I found skimming through Iris chapters, especially, just wanting to get back to Mare. At least with Evangeline, she was often interacting with Mare or Cal.
