The Red Queen series started as a strong, following Mare Barrow and the insane path her life takes once she has realized the power she has within. The first book was definitely the strongest of the series. The middle two books did hold up pretty well and I was happy when Aveyard pivoted to multiple POVs. However, I think there was just too much switching between POV in this book. Like I really think we could have done without Iris’s POV.
I don’t really know how I expected the series to end, but this definitely wasn’t it. This book lagged and it felt like nothing crazy went on until the final couple of chapters. I thought every title of the previous books made sense, but War Storm was definitely not a fitting title for this story.
Honestly, I was just really disappointed by this book. I really enjoyed the previous ones and was excited to see how the story ended. If this weren’t the final book in the series, I would have given it 3 stars, but since it is the last book, this gets a 2.

I loved it. I hated it. But alas, it’s over.

I gave up on this book halfway through a while ago, but I've finally finished it now. While I'm relieved to have it done, I wish I enjoyed this more. I loved Red Queen, but with each consecutive book, it felt like the story got more out of hand.
With this last one, I found myself comparing it to ACOWAR, which was more interesting, or Holly Black's The Queen of Nothing, which got it done more efficiently. Maybe those aren't fair comparisons but that's where my mind went.

I have never been so happy to see a series end or so painfully disinterested in the finale of a series. Evangeline's perspective is the only thing that kept me reading through the last two books.

I ate up this series but this book landed flat. The political aspects were so good. Mare’s struggle between right and wrong and her inner turmoil with what she wanted versus what was right lead to really good character development. With that said, I did frequently have to remind myself she was only 18 and this was a YA book. Lots of angst.
The battle scenes were epic. But the ending of this book was SOO anticlimactic. Killing Maven? It doesn’t need to be gorey to be good but there was a big empty hole left where a good ending could have been.
Cal asking if it’s too late? Amazing. He was tired of the crown. But then in the epilogue he blames Mare?! Wtf is that?
Also, I think our author wanted to give everyone a somewhat happy ending so she started to pair up Kilorn and Cameron. And there was no chemistry between them so it was an incredibly odd pairing. Not to mention, Cameron is 15!! It’s only a 3 year age gap but when he’s 18 and she harps on being so young - it doesn’t feel right. There were plenty of other “love interests” to choose from for Kilorn.
And screw Evangeline.

I loved the series! This book is a fitting end. It had a few of my favorite things; slow burn, side characters with their own motivations, sci-fi....
