A disappointment compared to his first novel, but still a good read.

This second in the cemetery of lost books series is set some 20 + years before the shadow of the wind and introduces us to David Martin whose violent father is murdered, David ends up working in the newspaper where his father had laboured before eventually demonstrating a talent for writing thrilling pot boilers. Approached by the mysterious Andreas correlli he is commissioned to create a bible like fable and is drawn into a web of intrigue and peril which involves great characters such as the young assistant Isabella and the original owner of sempere books (whose grandson is lead in the first book).
The book is both magical and gothic, capturing the feeling of threat and paranoia in the dark streets of Barcelona perfectly. A really enjoyable read that added to the story of the cemetery of lost books, a significant character linking the two stories. I am looking forward to reading the next in the series and thoroughly recommend the books.

This was my reaction to the many many twist and turns in Carlos Ruiz Zafon sequel to The Shadow of the Wind:

Mr Zafon delivers yet another masterful, gothic, sassy, Erry, plot twisting sequel that had me ensnared to the very end. Even though 'The Shadow of the Wind' was and will always be ( so far) in a league of it's own and my personal favorite, this book still packed all the right punches that kept me shouting ( Bullshit ) to the very end.
The author's writings articulated the characters feelings vividly and once again I was left with a plethora of notable quotes to add to my ever growing repertoire. This read, as with it predecessor will definitely stay with me for a very, very long time.

I enjoyed this book, but I'm still not sure I really understand everything that happened. This wasn't as good as The Shadow of the Wind, for me, and I found David incredibly annoying. Regardless, it was a fun read and I love Zafón's writing.
Another gripping book in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series. This one has all the magic and romance of the first, and I could hardly put it down.
This was not as good as The Shadow of the Wind; the first portion was good, but the rest didn't meet my expectations.

Carlos Ruiz Zafón is one of the most poetic writers I've ever read a book from. I adore the way he is able to create an atmosphere in his books. This book was not as good as the first book, but still highly enjoyable. The first book just has a very special place in my heart and I'm sure that book will always be one of my favorites. It's hard to top that!

The book seems a bit long for the story that is told, but it's filled with amazing characters, a great atmosphere and a plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The way Carlos Ruiz Zafón wrote this book; you will get the feeling that you're right there with David Martín.
