Devil's Advocate type book using an author instead of a lawyer. Love the prose of the writing but he kinda lost me toward the end. I wasn't as excited about picking up the book to finish it. I am, however, going to read his other books. Maybe I would have liked it more if I had read "The Shadow of the Wind" first?

I really liked this author's previous book The Shadow of the Wind. But this one felt more disjointed. It has been translated from the original Spanish version and I kept feeling that perhaps crucial things were left out. I was kept out of being fully involved in the story by being a touch confused. I did like it, but not as mush as I like his previous novel.

This is the second in the series

I liked "The Shadow of the Wind" so much that I just had to read another story in it's universe.
This time, we are taken to the 20's in Barcelona, long before the events of the first book.
Once more, the characters were captivating and the descriptions and dialogues on point. For me, the story line wasn't as interesting as the first one, but was still intriguing.
My favorite parts were the crossovers with the "The Shadow of the Wind" references, and I absolutely loved Isabella, my favorite woman written by Zafón so far.
Will definitely read the next one as well.

It was much more of a complicated thriller than I thought, so it was scary to me.

I loved the writing and found myself getting drawn into the plot and it's magical realism. Zafon really slips a reader into the world of this book, all along there are hints but one is still left wondering, what is really happening and who is causing all of it. A very good read.

4.5

A great story marred by a patchy and incredulous ending, the conundrum faced by all the Greats. I have much respect for Zafon, mainly because of The Shadow of the Wind, probably the best love story to literature I have ever read. This one was good, an all-around excellent thriller, just not quite up there in the level of sadness and suspense with Shadow.
