re-reading!
All right all you folks to whom I said, wait until I say to get [b:Shadow of the Wind|1232|The Shadow of the Wind|Carlos Ruiz Zafón|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51Y%2BEKb3qgL._SL75_.jpg|3209783]!
Wait no longer. *But* get [b:The Angel's Game|4912857|The Angel's Game|Carlos Ruiz Zafón|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51nBUKGP-YL._SL75_.jpg|3252824] first. Or buy them both (with the coupon that continues through Thursday you can get $2 off Shadow--Angel is already 30% off) and read them in this order: Angel, then Shadow.
(and if you can, please get them from my branch store--I'd really appreciate it!)
Having read them in order of release, I'd have to say that Shadow of the Wind is the stronger (read: spine-tingling, breath-taking, gush about it to anyone who will listen) book. But that its prequel, Angel's Game, is not without merit. It's a great introduction to Zafon's writing style, though it travels a different literary road than its precursor. Right after I finished reading, I felt oddly bereft, and may have graded it down for eliciting that feeling. But the more I discussed it with others, the more I found enjoyment in the book. I hope you will find it too. (first read 5/31/09)

While this book has much lower ratings than The Shadow Of The Wind I somehow managed to like it more. And probably the only thing I didn't like in it at all was horrible translation. Don't read Zafon's books in Ukrainian if you can help it.
I love stories about writers and here I was hooked from the very beginning. David Martin is talented author who led quite lonely and unlucky life. He is terminally ill and dying but one day mysterious man approaches him and asks to write special book for a grand reward. David, having nothing to lose, agrees.
This is how dark story, full of love and loss, despair and hope, mysterious people and unexpected things, begins. It was intriguing, mesmerizing and creepy at times. So much darker than first book but probably I liked it more because of this. Also I loved David, he was such a complicated character, not always good and positive, but I got quite fond of him.
Ending was quite unexpected, romantic and sentimental even. Totally didn't predict that but I even got chills for a moment when I closed the book. So, it was good. I will definitely get to third one shortly after this.

Shadow of the Wind is all kittens and rainbows compared to this book. An intriguing story about cursed writers and mysterious and supernatural going ons but it’s very depressing, and the body count does add up by the end. Some loose ends are not properly tied up, though perhaps the intention of the author - looking forward to reading theories on the Internet because I’ve got questions. Also I wish there were more appearances made by the boss - whether he is Satan or not. Will do a reread in a few years.
Okay, so I think I would give it 4.5 stars, but I love Zafon as a writer and this was a great book. By the end, I didn't know what to think and there are many things left unexplained, ah the unrealiable first person narrator!
After finishing this book, I was thinking I might have missed out on something, but when I read a discussion post from the time my book club read this (on Goodreads) they all had the same questions I had.
I don't want to post any of my thoughts since they would be considered spoilers, but DANG!
I had a lot of fun reading this, and enjoyed the search for what was reallying going on, but I also just want to know is David just crazy?! Also, the ending was strange. Ugh! I just want Zafon to tell me what's really going on!

I loved this book. It was a lot different than it's predecessor, the Shadow of the Wind, but I loved that about it. The ending sunk in for me and I was sitting there in awe for about twenty seconds to muddle everything over before I closed the book haha! Great book, great author! If you haven't read it, do so!
