I would give this 5 stars for the richness of the writing, but only 2 for the plot so final score is 3 stars. Like "The Shadow of the Wind," this novel is beautifully written. Among the similarities between the two: Barcelona is the setting, Paris is also mentioned, there's a book within a book, the main characters are young men struggling with romantic and familial love, a dodgy investigator, and numerous twists and turns.
However, the characters in "The Angle's Game" were more two-dimensional and the various strands of the plot were haphazardly connected at the end. It left me with more questions than answers.
It was highly enjoyable to read and held my attention throughout, despite the length. But, as I neared the end and it became clear there weren't enough pages to satisfactorily address all the remaining threads, I became disappointed. I thought to myself "How could he have taken over 500 pages and STILL not have resolved the story??"
I'm glad I read "The Shadow of the Wind" first.

I'm a bit confused by the ending...
"Every book has a soul, the soul of the person who wrote it and the soul of those who read it and dream about it."

I read and absolutely loved the first book in this series 10 years ago. I did not like this one as much although I do enjoy the author/translator’s writing style. This one was too long (531 pages) and the story dragged a bit as a result. There are also portions of it that I am still confused by, including the ending. Overall, it seems that Ruiz Zafon was trying to fit too much in here and with more editing, I think it would have appealed to me more.

Wow, i was not expecting THAT ending. Combination of “where are the tissues?!” and “what the eff?!” I’ve already put the next book on hold.
