This is one of those books that writing a review is extremely difficult. I don't want to spoil. I also am speechless. So much happens!! I had so many feelings while reading this roller coaster ride. All I can say is that I hope a certain female character dies a very painful death. I don't care if she's been manipulated since she was young by a god. She's gotta go. If you enjoyed book 1 then you definitely need to read book 2. That is all.

Book 2 is here and Maricol is in danger.
We pick up pretty much right where the first book leaves off. Vanya is struggling to keep people from questioning his choices as emperor (with not as many allies as those who would oppose him) - especially since Soren has taken Raiah away to keep her safe. And it seems Soren’s task is harder than they’d first thought it would be.
Caris and Blaine are dealing with their own issues - with the Clockwork Brigade and Caris’ heritage and poor Honovi is dealing with the aftermath of the decision he made in the previous book to save them. We won’t talk about poor Nathaniel - my poor heart can’t handle it.
And Eimarille - the character I love to hate. She’s claimed the throne and has her sights on Ashion and she’s devious enough she just might succeed.

Throughout this book Caris comes into her own, we get to see more of the wardens, Eimarille puts her plans into motion, Vanya has to gather supporters against Joelle to defend against her lies. Among other more spoilery things.

This book was everything I could’ve hoped for and more (despite all the torture of my babies) - and I can’t wait for the last book to come out. The last several, and I mean several, chapters are big and it, of course, ends on a bit of a cliffhanger.

While I found the first book more engrossing and a few things bugged me in this one, I couldn't really give it less than 5 stars - it's still really, really good.

As with the first book, there's a lot to like - intricately created world with interesting lore, a pretty cool cast of characters to follow, zombies...

Buuut I think perhaps the pacing was off. I adore the world and (most of) the characters, but I found it hard at times to pick up the book.
There were a few things that I don't think paid off or were not taken far enough to have a satisfying resolution (
SpoilerNathaniel's attempt to kill Caris was kinda silly, Amir's arc didn't pay off imo, Alida's betrayal was foreseeable
).
I still find Caris quite baffling as a character, or at least the way I think she is supposed to be perceived. I like it as an idea that the chosen one wouldn't want to be the chosen one - but here we also have the wardens, we have the Clockwork brigade, we have a whole lot of very selfless and brave characters in a battle between good and evil, so to say - so it feels... off that I think I'm supposed to be on her side or at least not dislike her for a good part of the book while she's being a petulant child...

Anyway, Gary Furlong - the narrator for the audiobook, is absolutely fantastic, again.

This book picks up exactly where the first one left off. Soren trying to protect the princess, Vanya defending her position and her life from her ex-mother-in-law Joelle, Caris who feels cornered in wanting to save the town, especially her parents and Nathalien and not wanting to feel used or want the crown. While she is protected by Blaine who has to get away from Hanovi because they have a duty to fulfill.
Speaking of Blaine, Turner made me suffer, I couldn't read fast enough to know what would happen to him and at the same time I had my heart on my hands for Soren. I wanted to go into the book and save them from everyone. Blaine and Honovi have a long healing road ahead of them I just hope Blaine doesn't shut down.

Now Soren, my favorite character, how he suffers and the ending with Vanya destroyed me. I really got mad at Vanya because he didn't even give Soren a chance to explain himself, after all they've been through.

What I also liked a lot is that the Wardens have a greater role and such interesting characters, I think a book could be written just about them.

In this second part we see more of the political structure and how they will prepare for what is coming, that thanks to Eimarille and Terilyn it will become hell and it will be a save who can

I need to read the next book now
